Without that curved neck on that lower hose connection it will rub. I remember original stock radiators having that style back in my junk yard days in the 70's and early 80's.

Gordo, even WITH the correct lower outlet, it will rub.

Looks like you have a long water pump. The inlet is angled down more than the short pump which was the original stock pumps for these trucks.

I have the same same setup, and had a heck of a time finding the right hose. Finally found one that fits perfectly. It's a Goodyear, part # 60751. It's actually the replacement hose for a 72 Blazer.

I can't explain it but my 71 C10, short box, with a sb sitting in 6 frame mounts, long water pump, full size radiator, lower neck turned upward, has a minimum clearance of 1" or more between the frame and lower hose at any given point. The radiator shop at first gave me a radiator with a straight neck and I remember having issues with the lower hose, so I had them swap the necks from the old radiator. I wish I had a digital camera so I could post a pic but I don't.

This is what I found for my 68. It clears the bump in the frame, and the split loom can on the hose from the parts house. CarQuest #20843. The upper hose (no pic, dead batteries) is #20607 and works perfect with the original radiator and angled water neck.

We have (8) small block trucks and clearance for the lower hose is approximately 1/2" on them. I would imagine that if the radiator support mounts are bad or weak than that could contribute to the lack of clearance. Trimming the hose is an option if more clearance is needed.

Here is a pic of one of our lower hoses. As can be seen from the picture, there is adequate clearance.

UPDATE

let me be clear.... i am well aware that a majority of you believe that the lower radiator hose typically rubs the framerail just below the battery.... however, i am a perfectionist, and i want the very best for my girl (the truck), so i have to get this right....

Gordo suggested NAPA's 7581 lower radiator hose... it looks almost EXACTLY like the hose in the picture below... so i went and purchased one, and tried to install it today.... however, there were problems....

the bend in the hose is PERFECT... it goes around the frame rail, and matches up almost perfectly to both the radiator AND the water pump.... it would only require a small trimming to obtain the correct length....

however, the diameter of the hose does not fit.... the end on the radiator side is TOO small, and the other end has a flared opening, but after trimming the hose to fit, the flare would nearly disappear, returning to the smaller radius, and not fitting the water pump.... so, i'm headed back to return it tomorrow, and try a few of the other suggestions which were:

a GoodYear 60751
an Advanced Auto D71244

any other PICTURES and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....
-> do you have a lower radiator hose that DOESNT rub the frame rail?
-> do you have a small block V8?
if so, PLEASE POST A PIC! maybe we can figure out what hose you have!

thanks guys!
i'll keep at it! wish me luck!
ciao!

the hose you have is for a 73 up truck(small neck on the radiator). the neck on the rad is also straight on the later trucks.....you have the stock style rad with the curved neck...right? if thats the case, finding a perfect fit hose could be tough. my longhorn has the sb mounted in I6 position, & runs the long waterpump that your pic shows....also , I have the later truck rad & lower hose. it fits, & doesnt rub....but i couldnt swear that I am right at stock height on the mounting. here are a few pics http://community.webshots.com/user/hotrodhorn you will see what i am refering to.....not too much is left stock on the nose of the truck. best of luck, crazyL

Hey Jewels,

That pic of the hose on the motor is mine. Like crazy longhorn said, it is for a 73 and ^ truck. It is a VERY tight fit on the radiator. Also, having the radiator side point at an upward angle doesn't help.

I used a little bit of KY Jelly on that end along with a hose pick (a curved pick tool that I got from Mac Tools). It took a little time and some choice words, but it finally went on and fits just right. And I am very picky too!

But, since I got broad-sided in my 68 on Sunday , my front clip will be coming off, along with that finiky hose!!

YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!

can you tell me, did you purchase and install that hose yourself? if so, were the ends of the hose too small? did you have to really stretch them to get them to fit over the radiator and water pump?

YOU ARE AWESOME, DUDE!!!!!

thanks!

All I can tell you is it is a 1980 lower hose off of a gmc 305. newer water pump. measure your radiator outlet and I will measure the hose.

as someone posted recently with pics., go to any autopart store and ask for a 73-80 chevy truck 350 lower hose. it will have the bend in it to compensate for the frame.

Funny thing happened a couple of days after posting my response. My lower hose started leaking. I went to the autoparts store to get a new hose. i asked for the one that fits my 72 with 350. I got the hose and compared it to mine, it looked the same. So I buy it, get home and rmove my old hose only to find the new hose fits the water pump, but is too big for the radiator hose. Confused I looked at the old hose since they appear to be the same, and see what they did. The PO had taken a piece of the hose that fits the lower radiator outlet and put it on the outlet. Then slid the new hose over that one and clamped it down. I removed the smaller hose piece from the old hose and slid it over the lower hose outlet. Lubed ut up really good with some KY lube (Yes I keep it in the toolbox, just for reasons like this), and slid the new hose right over it. Clamped it down and it works great!! No leaks. Maybe this isn't the best way, but it does apear to work well. Maybe this will help until we get an acurate part number for a good hose.

If you really want to "fix" this, you need to re -engineer it. You are playing with parts from 2 different era's.....run em all, or redesign my thoughts on a solution arent cheap, but they should work. First, lets go over the situation.....the later(73-up hose) is too small to fit the rad? The old style rad also has a turned up neck....not so on the rad you need to fit that later hose to. All or none on the parts.....feel free to question me, or PM me on the situation, I have done this swap. crazyL
