Usually the #2 wire is connected to the battery at the starter. (but can be connected to the batt terminal on the alternator itself with a short piece of wire to clean things up) The #1 wire connects to the switched source. For vehicles with a batt warning light, the bulb is between the alternator and the switched source. For vehicles without this wire connects directly to the switch. (ignition)

I am still trying to figure out my short also, I put a test light between the neg cable and the neg batt terminal, it lit up, but then goes out fast ????

and wont come back on for a little bit, like its charging up or something ????
