Even the world class t-5 isn't all that strong. It is only rated at 305 foot pounds of torque.
If one were to want a 5 spped, and wanted to bang gears a little, but not allthe time, I would say to look at huck's set up real close...I drove it, I like it. I don't know the torque rating of it, but being that it is a truck tranny, and came bolted to 350 engines...I'm sure it is better than the T-5.

All T-5 trannys are overdrive. This came in mustangs, S-10's, camarows, trans ams/firebird, and I think maybe rangers too.

The Chevy T-5 trannies aren't that strong. That's just the way it is. If you baby it, then it'll last. I've been looking at doing this swap in my '68 for quite a while. I even have a WC T-5 from a Camaro that has a .63 overdrive. The only problem being the fab work for a shifter (or to swap tailshafts) and various other things. My T-5 actually has an elctronic speedo, but the speedo from my 3 speed will drop right in. They even have the same number of teeth.

Right now I'm looking for the NP A-833. It has a .73 overdrive and is a direct bolt-in for my truck. Don't tell anybody though, they might buy them all up I've got some T-5 links I'll post, just think about what you want and what you're willing to do to get there. There are always posting on www.inliners.org and www.stovebolt.com about T-5 swaps and problems. Good luck. John

Also, go to the Inliners page and click on "Tech Tips" on the left side, and go to "The T-5 Tranny Page". It has some usful information and links.

BTW: If you can find a good T-56, that's about the best way to go. As far as manual trannies with overdrive (.62 or .50 depending on years).

you got me to looking at these as a possibile cure for my high revs at hwy speeds... Anyone we know put one of these bad boys in a 67-72? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the shifter would be located WAY back in the cab from the looks of where it is located on the tranny.

What say guys, think this is doable?

I think there are three positions you can use on the T56, maybe I'm thinking of the Tremec TKO, which is another excellent strong overdrive 5 speed.

I installed a T-5 Out of a camaro In a 67 i had .. I had plans of building a 327 for the truck .. And my local tranmission shop was confident that if i tore it up he could install aftermarket hardned parts .. Just like you need to do with automatic transmissions that are behind severe apps. And have it hold up to whatever i could put on it.
But what does he know /

It worked out good with bucket seats but if you wanted to retain a bench No way.

I was going to build a custom MDF Console and intergrate a camaro bezel . or just put a universal shiftet boot on it.

bgood- The shifter would be farther back. I know a couple of people on the board have swapped one in. I just can't remember right now who it was. I'll see if I can't dig up more info.

1972C10- You can retain a bench seat with a Camaro T-5. You just have to swap the tailshaft housing from a S-10 T-5 on there. There's a write up on the Inliners site about it.

The consensus among most people is that the T-5 won't hold up under severe abuse, or a good amount of power. That's not to say they won't, just that most people haven't had much luck with them under those conditions.

If you get a chance, could you ask your local tranny shop what parts they would install, and where they would get them from. The only parts I've seen to beef up a WC T-5 is a counter gear stabilizer. http://www.5speeds.com/t5.htm

I don't think I've read anything on how to beef up a NWC T-5 though. If you get the info please post it up. Hopefully your tranny guy has some info that can benefit us. Thanks. John

The World Class version of the f-body t5's is the stronger one. If your going thru the work Id highly consider a T56 instead. Very strong and the 6th gear is awesome for cruising down the interstate.

I have a t5 from a Camaro, put it in 6 years ago, used the truck as a daily driver, never had any problems, and I have a bench seat. But with the stock 250, I don't have alot of stress on it, I just know it works great for me....

Yeah, the 200 4R is an auto overdrive.
As far as stock/junk yard items, the t-5 and t-56 are the only ones that I know of...at least car-wise. The truck ones are stronger (not talkin s-truck...c or k truck), but they aren't made for banging gears, and probably don't like the abuse.
