i'm going to use Classic Instuments in my 67. they make 3 3/8" guages that can fit the center hole, i've seen a lot of people use their clock in that spot. i just measured all the holes in my bezel the other day. all the holes "tunnel" down into the dash so the front of the openings are larger the the backs of the opening.

large holes : 5" down to 4 5/8
center: 3 3/4 down to 3 1/2

small holes ( i didn't pay much attention to these as i'm only using a 3 hole bezel in my truck. i think these measurements are correct): 2 5/8 down to 2 1/8

Steve, I would like to see what your new dash looks like!

Hmmmm, I've been wondering what kind of gauges I should use. I kinda like these:

Not sure who you are talking to but my redline is 6700... didn't make any power over 6400 so I don't take it past that.

I dont have any pictures yet because my trucks interior is gutted. I had to rewire the truck and painless was out of stock on their harnesses until Nov 12 so i took that as an oppurtunity to redo my interior. I have my new dash bezel cut out of aircraft grade bosa wood but i havent cut the holes out for the gauges yet because i am still not 100% sure what gauges im going to go with yet or how i am going to position them. Right now im leaning towards the tpi streamline series with the black and gray because my interior is two tone gray leather but im reconsidering using the wood after i saw some kick ass laminates. Im in no big rush because my cab has to be painted and i stll havent purchased the seats yet not to mention that each doorpanel took about 2 weeks to make and they are just starting on the kickpanels that will house the additional speaker and then they are going to make my headliner and im planning to do an overhead console and map lights so im sure the headliner will probably take about two weeks too. When i get the stuff covered and test fit i will snap photos and post them. Ive seen some pretty nice interiors around here but mine should rival anything anyone has ever seen. After all, i am using all aircraft grade materials and the guys doing the work are use to designing and installing multimillion dollar custom interiors for planes so it should be 1st class all the way. Right now its just a bunch of uncovered honeycomb but when it gets further along i'll post pics.

On the guages....... Does anyone know if i could run an electric tach and speedo with an old school motor? Im pretty positive that my current tack and speedo are mechanical but i want to go with electric gauges, is this possible and if so what is needed? Eventually i'm going to install a tpi motot and 700r4 but the motor and tranny in it now are strong and so i want to wear them out first.

tachs are all electric. as far as the elec speedo you need a VSS sensor to make it work. if you went with a 4l60e instead of a 700r4 it would already have a VSS. Other wise you need to make one work. personally it;s not worth the money and time. the LCD just looks cooler...

Actually Firstgen, Tachs aren't all electric,, There are some that run off of the Distributor, Even though I don't believe there are very many made any longer...

Like was said, cable driven tachs have been around for about 50 years on cars.

Also, he doesn't actually need to step up to a 4l60e trans to get an electronic VSS. Plenty of 700r4s used electric VSS. 88-92 Chevy trucks are the most common.

LCD gauges are neat, but they're not for everyone. The tend to always hunt. That is, when you look at them, they are never setting still, the numbers change constantly. Kind of a pain to get a reading on sometimes.

speedometer or tach, either one will have a cable running to it if it's mechanical. Wires if it's electric.

Mechanical tachs are typically driven via cable off of the distributor.

Well I guess I've never seen a mechanical tach then. I'm pretty positive that mechanical tachs were not used on our trucks anyway, am I wrong?

Actually the LCD on my elec speedo is not hard to get a reading from since it only displays your trip and odometer. I know what you are saying though, for a fast changing measurement LCD displays can be difficult to read. In my case I think it is just easier to read and a little more accurate because you can more easily adjust your speedo than with different gears in the tranny case...

I put an AutoMeter tach in the center hole. It's a 3/8". I think the style was "classic chrome" it fit very nice in the center hole. but I did have to cut a hole in the plastic lens. The only problem I have is that the pointer trembles at idle and up to about 1500 or 2000. After that it moves smoothly. Could this be a wiring problem (i only used 16 gauge wire) or is my motor just not running smoothly at low rpm? Any ideas would be appriciated.

I spoke with the guy at tpi gauges and he said i could buy a "pulse generator" and convert from mechanical to electric speedo.

I can't remeber ever seeing a gauge there. It would not suprise me if they put a vac gauge there in some ultra rare dash.

I don't see that it was answered - So it's a vacuum guage? Anyone know for sure?

Yea, but somebody would've complained if a new thread was started with "searching" first...

Vacuum gauge or air pressure guage would be the correct answer I'd guess. (Air pressure came on the bigger trucks, ie c50)
