I am way for what Blue Beard says! I think a persons safety is worth way more than MPG. If one of our trucks hits or gets hit by a small ricer, which one do you wish to be in?? If you think gas costs a lot try losing your health.

Joshua, I'd go with the 307 and a 4bbl carb (600 with vac secondary and electric choke). Automatic tranny and 323 rear gears. You should keep it around 16-18mpg if you keep your foot out of it.

That's not what your first post said. You made it sound like you wanted to sell the BB and buy a 6 cyl truck out of the blue. Now you say you had a second truck awaiting one of three engines that you already have!!! You could have simply asked which of the three engines would give you the best mileage in the SWB! You wasted our time.

Poet, I read his original question as selling the BB truck. Then putting a 230 L6/th350, or 307/700r4 in a short bed. I would hesitate jumping off the handle and saying your time was wasted. I know your new here, so please don't flame board members... not a good way to make friends here

I will jump in with my 2 bits.... I have a 250 with a t5 ,and 3.73 gears,have never torn the engine down and get 17 mph or so. I dont tow anything or squeal the tires,BUT I HAVE FUN WITH MY 6!!!! I have had the truck loaded so full of dirt the trailer hitch bumped the ground and it handled it just fine. I rev at about 2100 at 65mph, works great for me !!!! Top speed is about 85, and dont look for much oomph in 5th, but it handled the mountains in pennsylvania at 70 just fine. Now saying that, the truck is now longer a daily driver, I have it all ripped apart for a frame off resto, and I am putting a 292 in it.
Just my experience with the 6, its my toy and I like 'em.

I don't even know (and don't really care) what the mpg is on my '72 with a "mild" 350ci/TH350/3:07. My other cars are: '96 Tahoe (14mpg), '04 Silverado S/S(12mpg). But my daily-driver is a restored '68 VW Beetle (30mpg). I like driving the old '72 best. It'll be even better after she gets restored (again).

I'll add my .02. Use the the 305 w/ 700R4. I'll disagree with the suggestion of the 600 holley. I've never found a 600 holley worth puttin on a Chevy...maybe on a Ford. Get a small Qjet off a 81-86 1/2 ton chevy truck.

Six cylinders are underpowered for these trucks, IMHO

I'm not in a frizzy. He could have asked the real question he was getting at. We, or at least those better informed than I about his spare engine selection, could have more directly addressed his desire to obtain good mileage from amongst his engines awaiting install.

I, and many other board members, did waste our time talking up, or down, variously such unrelated concerns as cheap, high-mileage imports, buying and selling transactions, sticking with the BBC truck, the esoteric advantages of driving a GMC/Chevy classic, gas bills vs. second car insurance costs, etc.–all of which has nothing to do with his desire to know which is the most fuel economical engine from his selection awaiting be installed in a spare truck he aready has but never mentioned until page 2! Definately a waste of oft precious time.

And you call my last post flaming?! Paaahhhllease! All I did was point out his error and state that he wasted our time. Tame stuff by any BB standard.

I have a 5 spd in my truck. With my past combination (327 and TBI) I would get about 20-22mpg. That's with a 3.54 rear gear, "28 tall tires and a cruise RPM of 2100 at 70. That would be driving as conservative as humanly possible. The new combo 350 HO and 4 bbl is still out to jury. From what little I've driven it, it's not going to be nearly as good. I hope the motor needs to broken in a bit still.

It seems like 327s always get good reports, especially among the 2wd owners. I can't believe you gave it up after injecting it and backing it with a 5-speed (no doubt OD)! Surely, one of the best Chevy engines, ever.

FWIW, I haven't actually figured it, but I know that taking out the 350 4bbl, mild cam, qjet,(hole in #1 piston) w/ powerglide and installing tired 305 2bbl w/turbo 350, just about doubled my fuel mileage. It has the 3:08 gears.

I totally agree with your sentiment regarding this BB but disagree with your substance regarding this thread. While we disagree on whether he wasted anyone's time, we apparently agree that this is one of the best classic "car" enthusiast BBs around. Such worthy and warranted support for this board and its members need not restrict a member's minor criticisms of another's actions, as long as said criticisms do not involve ad hominem attacks.
