Robby - The coil bracket should be an easy score at a salvage yard. You can also try a parts store, they come in the box with a new coil.

Hey, Robbie, hang in there. This might be a premature offer, but I'm possibly buying a new 250 for the truck this weekend and it has an electronic ignition system. If I put it in the truck, I'll ship my old ignition coil bracket to you. No worries on the shipping, I get most of that stuff through work for free.

You'll probably want to blast and spray it, it's a little grimy.

I'll let you know ASAP. Probably won't know anything till monday.

292's also have a big bypass hose on the front of the engine above the water pump.

Like already mentioned, there were only 2 inline engines offered 67 - 72, the 250, and the 292.


Longhorn, my 69 panel has a 230 I6 (i am sure it's not original), but I use 1968 van info when part shopping, because I thought they had the 230 from factory? Am I off-base?

look at the alternator - its got two belts. i've seen that on lots of dodges but not 250's. it looks cool & all HEAVY DUTY! also notice the alt bracket that has the adjuster slot on it for a ps pump...

Seriously, I want to put power steering in it this weekend. Do you have PS in your truck?

Does anyone have pics of a PS install for this engine?

I thought that's what the extra slot was for, but I wasn't sure. I don't know what parts I need to install PS.

I know I need the PS pump.
I think I need a steering box.
I am guessing I would need a new pitman arm.

Are there any writeups on the forum explaining how to add PS to an '68 230/250 I-6 like this?

The PS brackets are different for 250's and 292's so you have to make sure you get the right ones.

sorry, I don't have the ps on mine. I kinda going with a resdtoration on this one. My 69 swb pickup has all the ps, pb, etc. but it is a V8.. I am doing resto/customizing on it. good luck though.. could be a nice addition.

Yeah, I got the new engine in and I'm moving to a new distributor and firing system. I should have the bracket you need, just need a couple of days to make sure the new distributor and ignition system is working correctly (I work during the week; expected to have it done this weekend, but time and weather didn't permit).

Lack of metal shavings just means they could be hiding in the filter. Suggest you disconnect the water pump to verify that's not it. I also notice a black spot under the 2nd port on the exhaust manifold. Could be an exhaust leak making that noise as well.

After pulling the engine and seeing the manifold/intake gasket and how badly it was blown out, I can tell you: you are 100% correct - the knock was coming from the manifold.

The manifold was blowing exhaust out of every port in the middle and onto the driver's side of the block. The gasket was literally blown apart all through the middle (it was one of the really good Felpro gaskets too, I'm really surprised).

After looking at the casting numbers, I'm also noticing that the original block was made in 1968, so I'm still convinced it is the original engine. I don't think it's the original tranny though.

ROBBIE - I just realized when I bought a new harmonic balancer that it would not be cost efficient to send you one - you can get a kickass chrome housing for the ingition coil at Napa for $7.

The price should be $ 6.49 without tax. That's about the same as I would pay for shipping and you'd be getting a used bracket....I'd just go get a new one. It makes more sense.

I think it's the same size of bolt that the grounding block uses. You should have a wire going from the negative side of your battery and it is bolted to the block between the distributor and the water pump.

I believe it's the same size of bolt.

Let me have the number that is "stamped" on the small pad to the left of the distributor. This is the "build number" The first letter is the Engine Assembly Plant I.D. and the next two numbers are the month, and the last two letters tell which engine it is! My two cent worth

Be happy to send you an interpretation of the pad number code.. rico
