My son and I spent a half a day pulling the carbs out of a 84 Honda Nighthawk and cleaning them up and putting them back in. It didn't want to start so I figured the needles and jets needed a good cleaning. Anyway I hit the start button and it didn't fire. I turned to him and said "wouldn't that suck if we spent all this time and it still won't start" He said to me "ya but its better than sitt'in inside watching T.V." That said it all for me.
Now we need to spend time on the 72 c10. ![]() |

All of those under the car sessions are a big part of why my dad and I are so tight. Also learned the proper way to curse that siezed bolt loose....

I bought my 68 stepside for my son (just turned 14) and I to work on and will be his first vehicle when he starts to drive. Figured he would take better care of it if he had sweat equity in it. And would be better equipped to take care of it if he knew every bolt in it. Great bonding experience and passing on a lost art. Finally found something, besides computer games, that he is really interested in and gets him outside. So many kids growing up today will not know how to fix anything automotive and will have to pay for it later. Keep on sharing.

I think in some cases a lot of people use new vehicles as a fianancial status. A friend of my dad made the statement " Everytime I see you it is in that raggedy truck or malibu ". I politely told him " Anyplace your new cars can go give me ten minutes to fill up and I will probaly beat you there". Also I Ttold him every vehicle I buy I leave with the title in my pocket and you leave with a contract for 48 payments. Funny he never mentions my Ford . Maybe he is a Ford guy or he remembers in the mid 1990's when I drove it from San Fransisco CA to Mississippi.(without air ) :

My step-son is 27,raised him since 3 1/2.Been through all that,rough teen years,sending him to college(while I do construction),then working with him,helping him get into his own business,and on 3/18 seeing his daughter born.His"real"dad,never paid child support,dictated(at one time)when his visits were,bad-mouthed me,and married a bee-itch that doesn`t acknowledge him.Guess who the grandad is?It ain`t easy,sure is worth it.Keep on keepin`on.

I think he is jealous, and you are giving the boys something he can't. Some people are just like that, and you have to put up with it.

[QUOTE=Gary Lee]okay 2 schools of thought on this....
FIRST, to a economic model, one must include the cost of time and labor into account... If one had the choice of working X hrs to pay for a new vehicle vs. cost of parts, initial cost, and labor... the new vehicle is pobably cheaper... until you look at what you gain... sense of accomplishment, pride, confidence in one's self..[QUOTE=Gary Lee] well, one factor to realize is that a restored vehicle will usually appreciate in value. A new one depreciates from the start. Cost of insurance, interst on the loan..all adds up.

This is OT, so I'm apologizing in advance. I don't want the thread to get locked down over me. I'm not trying to be argumentative, just trying to understand something here .... Quote:
Now, man-sex makes me want to vomit. I don't like dudes, but ... The same way one of the guys on the QEFTSG TV show might get excited about fabric in someone's place is the same way I might get excited about fabric in my truck. One is a house and the other is a car, both are material possessions that people fix up ... but that excitement has nothing to do with sexual preference. In fact, the only thing that separates me from the dude is what material possession I would get excited about stitching something up for and what I choose to stick my carrot into at night. Quote:
They're setting a positive example about how to live your life with regard to yourself and what endeavors you choose...kinda like the positive example fade94 is setting for his stepson. Quote:
I guess the thing that bothered me about the original post is your use of the word "fag" in such a positive thread. This thread has a lot of good information in it and it bothered me to see a hate-fueled word like "fag" in it. "Fag" is a slur and an insult. That's like me calling a person of colour the "n-bomb" or calling a white guy a "slavemaster" or "cracker" or someone of hispanic descent a "sp*c". Those same words, whether we realize it or not, were originally created to keep other people down by people who fear or hate. They're the same words that fuel racial and sexual stereotypes that get people killed or seriously hurt (Matthew Shephard, anyone? Martin Luther King?) Sorry to go off on a rant. I think I'm more sensitive to most. Jamis, I know you didn't mean harm with your word choice, it just rubbed me the wrong way for reasons described above.

i wouldnt sweat that fool. Every hater has some bs they want to talk and if its not the way you spend your time or money then its the way you live or dress or the crap you watch on tv or whatever.
The bottom line is that you dont owe this clown a gd thing and therefore his opinion caries zero weight. When he starts putting money in your bank account then he can evalute how you spend it but until then tell him to keep his mouth shut or teach him a lesson about what happens when he runs it. If i had a nickle for everytime ive been critisized in my life id be a rich man and chances are i could find 10 flaws in everyone else who finds one in me but in the end what good does all that hate do? If this guy thinks the way to win his sons respect is by tearing you down then the jokes on him because no man makes themself look better by insulting others, they just prove the point that they are the smaller person. If the boy enjoys spending time with you working on old trucks then i say keep doing it because those skills and memories can last him a life time, the bs his father talks wont do squat for him. |

Why do some people spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours a year on horses? Why do some people race cars? Why do some people build model kits, why do some people spend tons of money collecting "art", why do some people spend hundreds on pets?? WHy do some people spend thousands on rusted hunks of metal....AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON AND ON..... The reason....Because it's what the individual enjoys. No matter what it is, everyone of us spends A LOT of MONEY AND TIME on something that we love. Tell him to F off and get over it 'cause old chevy's kick ass!!!

Here is how to get to your stepsons real father. Tell him this well used line around my family members:
" Anybody can go out and buy a new vehicle and make payments. I prefer to spend my money on classic vehicles that retain their value over time, and that I don't have to spend $100 and hour having repaired !!" This line has shut up both of my brother-in-laws easily, as well as my sister-in-law. BTW, guess who asked to borrow my old, reliable, POS truck when their new junker died ? The same people who bad mouthed it

when i'm driving my old truck, i get more stares and looks and appreciation then any guy that goes out and buys a brand new $50k pickup. old trucks are awesome because they are simple, easy to work on, but the best part is they are unique.

Every time I've got my truck out (never more than a few minutes each ride), I get at least one or two comments from people next to me at stop lights or at the gas station about my truck. Makes me proud.
DEP brings up a good point and gave me an idea - maybe you should drag the kid out in one of the "old clunkers" when it's lookin' good and show him how people react to something like that. It's a proud feeling when you own something and someone tells you, "damn...now that is a NICE ride". It might help him get an idea why you like it and show him the reward of what some hard work can do. Imagine how proud he'd feel if you took the time to work with him on the car - hell, let the both of them put the final touches on the car together - then carry it to a car show. They can both feel proud of the work they both did to complete the car and they'll feel that same sense of pride if they win any trophies - and every compliment will be given to all three of you who helped on the car. It might be healthy. I think the thing to do here is be the bigger man - you gotta keep from badmouthing the father long enough to show the son why it's so rewarding to do what you do...if you can show your son this, hopefully he'll see what a stupidass his father is for saying you're an idiot without trying to understand why you feel that way.
