Thanks for the discussion guys. I was always under the impression that TRUE "old school" were the hot-rods the boys did after returning home from WWII (like someone else mentioned).
What it all comes down to is that you make your truck how YOU want it to be, and screw whatever anyone else thinks!

Here's my start to an old school ride.71 GMC, 72 Corvette hubcaps, 350/350 turbo, will be painted flat black, flames and good meats on the back. The other is my 85 Monte SS. all stock 63,000 original miles.

Here's my def. of old school:
factory hubcaps original rims w/ skinny bias ply tires original AM radio home-made pushbumper and headache rack AND at least 6 different stewart warner gauges At least that's what my truck has. Except for the tires and I'm not using the original rims, went with radial tires instead.

Old School:
Anything pre 1975 (1980 For Pickups) and the main crux of the smog crap beginning with the Catalytic Converter. Though the PCV-Valve and the EGR valve have always been considered smog related it was the Catalytic Converter that affected both hotrodders and conservatives alike beginning in California. The PCV-Valve (Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve) replaced the down-draft-tube. Of course the EGR-Valve was implemented to burn unburned fuel after combustion (or steal horse power). . . Its actually the EGR-Valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve) that robs the majority of the power from a carburated engine and not the Catalytic Converter though they are basically a one two punch. "Old School" would include anything stock or custom related be it over the parts store counter or a dealership. Since hotrodding started in the 1940s (1945) after World War II old school would relate to anything automotive related and placed between 1945 and 1975. . . Though some do stretch "Old School" as far forward as 1985 when pretty much everything from a dealership (save for pickups) was Computer Controled Fuel Injected. But thats my two cents. *** Hmmmmm from 81 to 87 were the carb transition years where they had the computer controled throttle valve on the quadra's. I ferditted that though for the most part FI was used in 95% of the cars (ignoring pickups). There were computer controlled cars as early as 1977 if the computers is the referance but then again it wasnt the computers that ruined hot rodding it was the smog crap. And there again there were test engines as far back as 75 with EFI. . . Old School and there was a Mule engine at Oldsmobile for a quad valve (4 valves per cyl) as far back as 1968 (455cid). It later mutated into the Quad Four and we see its design in the Olds Aurora and the Caddy Northstar Engines. . . Eh well never mind. *** Come to think of it the "Old" way of lowering a car (or for that matter pickup though not many were at that time) was to clamp lead weights to the frame. Old school could be the ability to trouble shoot and find the problem easily on these older rides.You dont need a computer or a certified genious to tell you whats wrong.No fuel ?check the carb. for gas. No spark ? place the coil wire about a 1/4 inch from the coil and look for spark.These days you have too many sensors and gadgets to deal with. I'll take the old school any day when it comes to simple repairs.

Drogster, slam your truck and have someone hand paint a speed shop logo on the doors, just don't go to old on the logo though. No five digit telephone numbers.

I thought Lead-Sleds were called that`cause of the predominant body-mods executed with the use of lead,before Bondo.Learn something every day.By the way,Lead-Sleds are definately"Old-School".I still say,as far as in car terms go,old school was the early years when there was more"Home-Shop-Builts"than "bolt-on" or"store-bought"hot rods & customs,pre-street machine/muscle car era.Somewhere in the early 60s-back.
