Don't know, If your not pulling anything serious, you might get close with a high rear end ratio as long as you have a low first gear to get moving. Diesels are more efficient the closer you get to idle.

86swb, Yeah the interior is ok, I don't like the carpet for the work we do with it. Plan on trying that heavy rubber stuff LMC sells, carpet and soil doesn't mix when your jumping in and out on the farm. You are right though, a PITA to get a diesel running when you run out of fuel or change fuel filters.

Danco, I am going to take it out over the weekend to replace acouple parts that made me nervous when I put it together the first time, plus I can see how it is holding up internally.

I'll snap some pictures of the bracket and driveshaft, its a bit crude as I haven't finished smoothing welds and adding the gussets in places for longevity yet, but it will give you the idea.

The battery hold down is custom huh Actually, we have a bunch of tractors we only use infrequently, and just use the batterys out of our trucks to start them, so we make it easy to put them in and out. My 1-ton has the same treatment

I have to admit the engineering or should I say re-engineering it took to install the Diesel engine and two transmissions is pretty impressive. I really appreciate that kind of work.
It reminds me of a mid '80's 3/4 ton truck I saw about a year ago where a fellow had pulled the original 6.2L Diesel and replaced it with a Cummins 5.9. He used it to pull a '30 fifth wheel camper.

So you put the slip-yokes together or you have a CV in there? I'd think there would be some degree of vibration if you just had the two slip yokes joined with a u-joint.

TP...I like your rig and would like to see some pictures of that transmission set up if possible. One question...if you put them both in reverse do you go forward? We put a 350 chevy with a three speed in a Massey Harris 20 a few years back, when you put the 3sp in reverse and the tractor trans in reverse--it went forward!

after seing this, i am seriously considering a diesel swap into my truck...I already know what engine can be used, yet weighs less, and can pull about 450HP if all is done right....the only thing that i cam concerned about is the transmission

in finland, there are people that customize their mercedes diesels(dont know how popular it is), but some of them have over 450HP, and 400+torque. the benefits of the mercedes engine is that its smaller(weight, and exterior dimensions), but lasts very long, and also revs real nice(4.5k is no problem). If i could get something like a T-56 to bolt up, and get everything there fine and afford the rebuild, and new turbo and such, it would be a cool thing.

What engine are you planning on using that makes 450 hp? Number is obtainable out of a 6BTA5.9 with alot of $$$, but these old truck chassis would never take the stress, a 450 hp Diesel engine is WAY different from a 450 hp gasser, the torque on the low end would tear anything and everything up. You'd have to run a 9, 10, or 13 spd Roadranger at that power level.

Peninsular Marine builds 450hp 6.5s with twin turbos.....for boats where you have a hole lake of water to cool them.I`m sure with a bigger turbo,intercooler,and a tweek on the pump you could get a good bit more reliable hp from one of those Cummins,if you thought you needed it.Personally,I`d be real content with what you have there,TP.(as I think you are)

I just came across this thread. I thought I had read something about using a second transmission backwards as an overdrive, but I couldn't find the reference. It's good to know that now I won't have to work out all the details myself after all.
Did you leave all the original gears in the second tranny?
Did a single U-joint work between the trannies or did you have to use two?
The method of connecting the output yoke to the original input shaft is truly ingenious. Did you have to provide any extra support for the shaft since it isn't supported by the clutch and pilot bearing any more?
Presumably, you've been driving it long enough by now to find out if any unexpected problems developed. Any updates?

I am sure you've probably already thought of this, but I know the military Gama Goats had Detroit 3-53's with a 4 speed tranny. I have heard these are GM issue (SM465 I'd guess?), so that may be an avenue to look into.
