I'd do the Akracing method then use a flat clear coat over the top.

Found clear coat, same brand AK mentioned in a matte for 22.95 a gallon.

Single stage flat black paint, not primer, cleans up nicely. And cheap also.

Sorry for the slight high jack.

Just paint. Most of the body work is done. I am welding holes and such now.

The other sheet metal goes out for bead blasting tomorrow.

I'd want it painted in separate pieces and I will do the final assembly.

- i know you have lots of options...but with a limited budget you are looking @ primer or this Napa Flat Black Stuff. You can also get a gallon of Base from Southern Poly and A Gallon Of Clear with flattener and a gallon of reducer..but it is still going to cost you $200+ by the time you all done with it.
Nothing about painting a car is cheap...not sandpaper, plastic, tape, and especially paint. Black Epoxy is about $110/gallon with reducer now...so even that is getting ridiculous.

I've heard of a lot of "HotRodders" over on the HAMB www.jalopyjournal.com message board using the
-John Deere Blitz Black (I haven't personally used it..but have seen it on cars and it looks pretty good)

-The MartinSenour "Napa" Comercial Coatings Flat Black that I've talked about (I'm very happy with the way it looks and the product)

-Rustoleum....it sounds crazy but i've thought about it....I painted the Chassis/inner Fenders/Rad Support, Rear End...etc....etc. with Rustoleum Satin Black..I bought 3 quarts of it and a gallon of Acetone to reduce it for like $7/quart and i think the Acetone was $10-12 all available @ the local Wallyworld (aka WalMart) The Satin Black is only a slight shade shinier than the Napa Stuff on my truck.

-Five Star Brand makes a Laquer Primer called "Hot Rod Black" ..but it is Laquer PRIMER, I don't know what it costs...i called a couple local paint suppliers and none of them could get it for me.

-Dupont sells a single stage eurathane enamel called "Hot Rod Black" but that is pretty expensive...it is almost cheaper to go with base/clear/flattening agent. I think my paint supplier gave me a price of $280 for 4 sprayable quarts!!!!! yikes...you'd probably need 5 for the average truck and 5-6 for your longhorn.

There are some pictures of the inner fenders/radiator support with the rustoleum.
Suprisingly it sprays pretty nicely and looks good...just make sure you clean the guns out good as it is an oil based paint.

Here is John Deer Flat it's great washes nice and to bluff just light sand and
shoot some paint.
Go for it. Comes in gallon or rattle. I have no fear or shame about the
rattle can. Same thing with set pressure and spray.
