Looks like I need to change over to one of them 700r4 transmissions and , 3:08 gears but already have the 255/60R15 tires. 16MPG? That is good.

16 MPG crusing 70 MPH!!! I get 13.? in the city. In the city I drive in 3rd. The torque converter locks at 1800 RPMs or ~45 MPH. A locking torque converter for city driving from 40-55 MPH is a key element. There are a lot of other factors too. Vinyl bed cover, aluminum wheels, aluminum radiator, electric fans, aero dynamics (yea right), good engine tune, maintenance.......it takes a lot of parts working together. OHHH and a light foot.

Lightbulb 700R4 vs. 3.08 gears

The 3.08s will help ONLY on the highway and will actually hurt the MPG in town. An OD tranny paired with decent gears will give you the best of both worlds.

Why would the 3:08 gears hurt you in the city? Do not understand.

Will this "slick wax" smooth out the surface rust on my truck? Maybe that would help.

When I drove the 68 every day, I averaged a piss-poor 6 MPG. Was running a worn out 350/TH350/3.73's, with 255/60/R15's out back.

Daily driver now gets me 17 or so on the highway, possibly a tad more than that on a really long trip. In town, I don't wanna know.
