Re: To cut or not to cut!! This is the question!!

I had no idea 69Oldie was doing that. Cool. I've never seen a longhorn 4X4 in person, but i have found a few on the web. The blue and white one (the one with big tires) sold on e-bay a few years ago if I remember correctly, the guy joined the board and sold the truck real quick. I remember it was a big block, but not much else.
I know a buddy of mine who was into the trail running said a Longhorn would suck in the trailes due to the added length, it would be a PITA to get around some of the turns in the trails.
But i don't think that is your goal is it?
I think you'd be better off to get a 133 inch frame and convert it to 4X4. Maybe do a graft from the firewall forward, or maybe even a later model torsion bar front end...
Here is a daulie longhorn... not a 4X4, but just throwing out ideas, it's easy to dream up things when it is someone else's check book.

Re: To cut or not to cut!! This is the question!!

No3Fan4Ever, You are hilariouse!! I guess the world will be out of ballance for a while longer...lol The original front end of the "Garden Truck" was rusted out badly and even was hit on the R/H side... So that went to the a long time ago. I realize that it might be easier to convert a longhorn 2x4 chassis to a 4x4 chassis, but I have a 4X4 chassis here that I have already done a lot of work to. This is why I wouldn't feel so bad about stretching it. The PO had welded hooks to the front, bent the front crossmember and a few other bad things that I already have repaired. I also had to move the front spring mounts out 1/4" each side to account for the wider spring pearches. Wich meant that I had to make braces for them and weld them in place for added strength. I also added a steering brace, new front crossmember, factory skid plate, and have set it up for the rear mount Blazer tank. So lots of work has already gone into the chassis, so I just as well stick with it. Crazy Longhorn, I thought about the duely part also and do agree that it would be cool as he!!. I am still mulling that around..lol I know I am not the first to do this, but I think it would be bad a$$ anyway. So for now I will move forward.. I can't wait to make that Longhorn steel bed floor!!! WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Man, a Longhorn 4x4 would be awesome! Put a 12" lift on it with some 38's.......... Is it gonna be a 4 speed or auto?

Yeah, yeah, yeah... Looks like the general consensus is cut it already! But I am with stueber68, keep that Milwaukee Sawzall running and make a crew cab out of it!! Talk about original. I like really big trucks. Keep us posted.

I like the extended cab idea too, but it isn't very practical. When I do an extended cab it will be like no other. You will just have to stay tuned for that project..lol WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Re: To cut or not to cut!! This is the question!!

Down here in McMinnville, there was a Longhorn body on a deuce an a half frame with the dually setup converted to single wheel. It was a huge beasty lookin' truck, but talking to the guy his max speed was like 45mph with that rearend! Anyway, he only used it for truck pulls or something like that and most of the time it just sat on the corner of the auto shop lot. I posted pics a couple years ago, but don't know if I could find them now.

My opinion is-do it if ya got the time, money, wifes consent. Pretty impractical, but this is from the guy that just cut his lwb to a swb!

Re: To cut or not to cut!! This is the question!!

LONGHAIR, I agree that is a pretty cool looking truck. You can tell that lots of time and effort went into it. However I like the look of the cabs as they are. I would only extend one about 4" and I would do it at the door. Then extend the door also. Then the truck has the same look as the original only a little more room to drive it. The look would be more like this. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

it's a 4X4, MUCH easier to run a one piece shaft in a 4 wheeler.

Yeah, what Jason said....

The one-tons could be had with a 157-inch wheelbase. You're gonna have to make it at least 133-inches for the Longhorn conversion, so adding 2 feet to the length of the cab, should make for an awesome and loooooooonghorn conversion. I mean, if you got the stuff, why not? You obviously have the talent and the room to do it, so why not go all out?

Like he said, he already put a butt load of cash and labor into a 127 inch 4X4 frame.

Re: To cut or not to cut!! This is the question!!

Longhorn Man and WES, Doesn't the Longhorn frame have a bigger (taller)cross section than a standard truck...or is the cross section on all 3/4 & 1 tons the same? If that is the case I would check to see how distance that section covers and match it. When I was aggressively wheeling I dented the entire back of my cab (short wheelbase truck) from the frame flexing when we slammed into the bottom of the hill climbs. The frame will flex and the box comes in contact with the cab. I would not have thought this was possible until it happened.

I thought that being a member of this site would mean you were an enthusiast of customs. Who cares about the resale value. Besides if you got it finished and then decided to sell that could really bring some money. You see all of these guys doing this stuff for a living they aren't building like original there are making them an original.

The longhorn and one ton frames are indeed taller. I don't know about the 4X4 trucks though.
That would be a seriouse issue on a 4X4 of this length, but only if he were to take it off road and thrash it a little. I get the feeling Wes isn't that kind of guy, but I could be wrong though.
The bed hitting the cab on a SWB, either there were some worn out cab bushings, or you were REALLY raggin on it. I can't see a good condition truck doing that myself, but an older worn out one easily having that problem.

Re: To cut or not to cut!! This is the question!!

Longhorn Man, The truck was only about 2 years old! We were hitting the base of those dunes at Pismo Beach pretty hard! I am not sure who got hammered worse...us of the truck...3 days of serious off-roading and heavy drinking. They lock people up for that kind of thing today at Pismo! I'm not proud of what I did...just thankful to be alive!

I have seen a couple of other 4x4's with the same "off-road" signature...LOL!

I don't think WES is the type to really off-road it but if you put that extra axle under there it had better be ready to take the punishment! I would not want to get a reputation as a "hack" fabricator!
