Talking Re: Just found out my 350 is a 305 :( What would you do?

Heres your options

1. Cut your losses and pull that POS out of the frame rail's while the thing is half torn down .

2. Reassemble that POS using all the old gaskets and fire it up with a large brick sitting on top of the happy peddle and wait for that sweet sound of a POS 305 going Boom!.

3. Get a A/C Delco crate Eng. and be done with it there's one for every budget it dont have to be a high output one! a stock 350 is good cuz it's a 350 then you can do pwr add on as money allows

Re: Just found out my 350 is a 305 :( What would you do?

I'd slap the 305 back together and run it till it dies. While you're running the 305, you can buy a used 350 and build it on the stand as time/money permit.

Yep, I did play with the idea of rebuilding an old 350, I actually had one for a while, but I got rid of it. For the value of my time and money, Goodwrench it is. and like what was said earlier, an Comp cam will give it about 300 hp or so with nothing else touched.

Too bad you are so far away . I have a 350 from an 83 3/4 ton in my way . Good luck with what ever you decide . I had a 305 in my truck in high school with a large cam ,carb, and intake . It was a dog until it got wound up . I ran the snot out of it until I finally spun a couple rod bearings . Frank

Wondering out loud ,you upset over the engine size or the fact you bought the nascar story, The simple fact is people going to lie to you the rest of your life ,if you catch on now learn from it now, maybe you should go thank the guy, cause it sure was a cheap lesson

just a thought
good luck

Re: Just found out my 350 is a 305 :( What would you do?

I once bought a mustang the guy swore it had been punched out .030 and had portef heads, a few months later when I tore it down(cuz it went boom lol) not only was it all stock but the rods were all mismatched like the motor had been thrown together. I bought it cheap enough but still was pissed the dude lied. As far as your bowtie block goes spend your money on nitrous. I only read the last few replies so I didn't even see what your drivin but screw it pump about a 150 shot into that smogged 305 until it poops rods on the hiway and then get yer 350. Then you've already got the NOS

I would sell the 305 and the parts that you can't use on the crate engine. This will help counter any $$$ you're out. Definately stick with a crate engine from GM 36K mile warranty and all brand new parts, nothing rebuilt.

The Goodwrench engine is 8.5:1 and 246HP for ~$1300. Given stock springs and "eh" iron heads you can't just stuff a cam in it and expect a rockin' engine - I sure wouldn't expect 54 FWHP from just a cam swap.

I have to admit that I'm still looking to start with how much you really have to spend - based on that I think you'd get a crisper message on good options. I don't know that $1300 for a low compression iron motor is the best deal on the planet - or all that upgradeable - but if you just want to do a drop and go I agree it's the shortest trip. If you're looking for cheap, I'm still not clear why you wouldn't just do a cheapie overhaul on the 305. If you don't want to put $$$ into the admittdly crud 305 heads then buy some good aftermarket ones and figure you'll swap them to a GOOD 350 when you get some add'l cash.

Sounds like you've made a choice; good luck and let us know how it works out!

Re: Just found out my 350 is a 305 :( What would you do?

It does cost more to rebuild a 305 compared to a 350. The other thing to is the same heads you use to make compression on a 305 probably wouldn't allow pump gas friendly compression in a 350 setup. It sounds to me that he would be happy with a goodwrench350. It's a hard deal to beat for a daily driver. If you wait and save up for the 350 H.0. that G.M. offers you could have the best of both worlds with performance(330hp-380tq) and reliability.

Theres an article on Chevy High Performance on upgrades for the base stock crate. They put an intake/headers/cam in it and got like 280 HP. All those things I have. I dont really care about the power numbers too much anyways. I drive slow with the bags. I drive fast, I tend to leave marks in the road

Swervin did it to his truck with cam swap, intake, and heads. Easily possible and also the CHP article mentioned did it with great numbers but the warranty also voids I believe since it's been modified.

No, the crate engines are new blocks. All new parts from Mexico.

Are you referencing this article below?:
http://chevyhiperformance.com/tech/e...ne/index1.html

Make sure you read the small print:
- manual transmission
- "350ci small-block awaited an overhaul" - no idea what the CR is
- World Products SR heads
- hydraulic flat-tappet, single-pattern Lunati camshaft (0.507 lift)

Veerrrry different engine all through.

I can tell I'm flogging a dead horse here.

I guess my point is that for $1300 you get an engine that you won't keep anything but the block and rods from if you build it up. And if power doesn't matter you could drop that into some decent heads and a cam for the 305 and get around the same numbers per my previous post.

300 FWHP on the engine dyno for a stock Goodwrench with cam, intake and heads? Key point here being heads, which changes the game completely. You can't stuff a big cam under stock heads with stock springs...which is what the Goodwrench comes with.

I guess I don't see this as an apples-to-apples comparison.

Re: Just found out my 350 is a 305 :( What would you do?

I found the article I think - the "Goodwrench Quest"?

I didn't see any $$$ for anything - is it later in the article? 290 HP was with head porting and a full valvetrain swap - the Comp Cams kit (with springs) was about $410, and I have to expect that the head work was AT LEAST $500 (backcut alone is ~350). So there's a crisp grand on top of the "crate" =:-* for 51 HP (239 -> 290)?

Re: Just found out my 350 is a 305 :( What would you do?

just my 2 cents but id love to have my 305 back. i replaced my 305 with a crate 350 from scoggin dickeys im not doggin them there great but my 305 had flat top pistons and a rv cam in it and pulled a little more with little bit better gas mileage.

Call these guys. They can set you up. I was happy with the motor I bought from them. turn the sound down on your computer before you clink the link, they have crappy music playing on the web site.

You're right. He bought the GM crate engine and wasn't happy after some time. Then swapped the factory heads and cam for Edelbrock aluminum heads and Comp Cams XE268 cam then added a Edelbrock aluminum intake. Same bottom end with the pistons, cranks rods, but just built up the top end to help out on the HP. Easily to upgrade these engines from the factory with the right combination of parts to work together.

But he's missing a TON of HP with that 8.5 CR...

Um, sure. I dont really see why you are fighting so hard to shoot down the crate engine low buck approach. Put the pipe down.
