Re: GMC Longhorn??????????

I have yet to see an unrestored all original GMC 'longhorn' that didn't have the Custom Camper badges, or at least the holes for them. I have seen plenty that have been repainted and were badgeless.

Re: GMC Longhorn??????????

The model number is going to tell you whether it is a long horn or not:

Chev Model# CE21034 is the same as GMC Model # CE26034

10 = 60 = the Cab to Axle Code; which happens to be a 133" WB truck.
34 = Fleetside box

I am going to theorize in that the reason why you see so many longhorns with the Z81 Custom Camper option is that back in those days the primary purpose of the Longhorn WAS to carry a slide in camper. I think it would be more rare to NOT find a Longhorn as a Custom Camper.

The Z17 Sierra Grande is the trim level, same as Chevy Cheyenne.

That's a pretty cool truck there Torquepower!

Re: GMC Longhorn??????????

the man that has this truck also has another longhorn that he won't sell(it was his dads)but he has an extra bed (8.5ft) with side molding that he might get rid of.i have not seen that many people in this part of the country looking for longhorn parts, just not many around here.

Re: GMC Longhorn??????????

Interesting thread... it has already answered a few of my questions. Here is the one I will be selling soon:

I watched it turn 50k original miles earlier today (might be the only time that happens to me)

After reading Longhorn Man's comments, I went out to see if it had holes for the Custom Camper badges above the door handles (it was repaint once, in 1986) - it does not have the holes, nor is anything mentioned on the option sticker about camper equipment, other than camper wiring and camper mirrors. It does have the heavy springs, swaybar, etc. Also says "Cheyenne equipment"?? Is this normal for a GMC or should it say Sierra equipment? That brings up another question that I'll have to go search on... what would a Sierra Grande add that this Sierra doesn't have? Tilt wheel is about all I think is missing... has woodgrain in the lower trim... headliner, etc. No woodgrain on the glovebox door though...

I have to say that for a 1-ton truck it sure does ride nicely. In fact it's a real pleasure to drive overall... has a gear vendors overdrive, working a/c, working cruise, etc. The model number is CE36034, but the wheelbase portion of the sticker just says "000.0"?

Re: GMC Longhorn??????????

Yeah,to your one question.I think a couple Chevy guys slipped into the print shop and typed Chevy names on GMC VIN-spec sheets,lol.My`72 Sierra says SierraGrande. So I can make mine a "Grande" and still be correct.I would have to cover the seat with a herringbone cover, install a woodgrain dash bezel & glovebox door, and since mine`s solid color, install upper side moulding. That`s a damn nice "GMC that is the exact counterpart to a Chevy Longhorn, yet has no name to promote it".I have seen these w/o CustomCamper script, original.

Re: GMC Longhorn??????????

The one I had was a '69 GMC 8 1/2 foot bed, long WB, and not one single emblem on it in regards to being a Longhorn. I almost installed the "Longhorn" emblems but didn't want to get called on the table by the purists... But as you can see by my screen name, I always referred to it as a Longhorn. It also had no reference to being a Custom Camper.

Re: GMC Longhorn??????????

this is an interesting thread, very old, with lotsa incorrect info in it - although it gets resolved as you read through.

To sum up:
- Sierra Grande is a trim level, kinda like a Chev's Cheyenne Super for level of trim (and GMC stuck it on the aft part of the bedside if you ordered it)
- Custom Camper has nothing to do with Longhorn, in either make (Chev or GMC), even though they are often both ordered as separate RPOs. Custom Camper (RPO Z81) is just a nameplate option. Gives you the "Custom Camper" script on 72 Chevs and 69-72 GMCs and it gives you the "CustomCamper20" (or 10 or 30) on the fender of 69-71 Chevs, and rectangular Custom Camper nameplate on 67-68s.
- Longhorn is simply a 133" wheel base truck with a 6" bed extension to accommodate. Chev put the "Longhorn" nameplate on the tail end, GMC did not (probably in order to avoid a conflict with the Sierra Grande trim level, if ordered)
- Model ID and 113" wb on the SPID are the only really way to confirm a Longhorn (unless a cab swap was done).

Below, pics in order:
1: 67-8 RPO Z81 got you this badge on the fender behind the wheelwell (a good looking emblem, I might add - was also found in the 60-66 trucks, although not certain which year it started, I've only seen it as far back as 66, personally)
2. 69-71 Chev RPO Z81 got you a badge like this in 10/20/30 levels on the fender behind the wheelwell
3. 72 (only) chevy and 69-72 GMC RPO Z81 got you this badge on the door
4. Chev (only) Longhorn name plate (installed on 133" wheelbase, 6" extended bed Chevs only)
5. GMC (only) RPO Z17 got you this Sierra Grande trim level badge on the bed

hyde77 - welcome to the forum! Recommend post your question as a NEW thread on the main 99-07 forum here http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/f...splay.php?f=58 rather than embedded in one in the 67-72 section with an unrelated original title. For example: Click on "New Thread" and title it something like "Speedometer problem in my 04 Sierra" - you'll get more pertinent replies that way. No worries, we all learned how and where to post at some point - again, welcome!
