free advice needed: fuel pump

Sounds like rust is blocking the sock(nylon cloth filter) in the fuel tank.
edit: or could be evap is not venting to tank causing a vacuum in the tank. When this happens take the fuel cap of (BE CAREFUL) do you here air rushing into the tank, Possible see fuel flying out. That would be a blocked vent line. 72 half a 3/4 tons had evap vent system 1 tons had a vented cap and no evap.

Did you ever get the problem fixed? I'm having the same problem on my truck I just purchased. Lucky for me this started AFTER I drove the truck from Alabama to S. Florida! I'm going outside to run the truck with the fuel pump feed side in a gas can to see if it can maintain pressure. If it does its a tank/pickup problem, if not its the fuel pump. Its a 72 truck also.

yes, i fixed the problem... It was actually the filter sock in the tank. it had become loose and was sucked up into the sender assembly, and somehow clogging it. replaced the sender and viola! problemos no mas...

Ive seen more issues due to those socks, either they come of and clog the line or they disenagrate and that stuff gets in your lines, your pump, carb, never seems to stop until your clean the tank. Any way if your still planning on doing the pump, like mentioned above make sure the cam lob is turned away from the pump , you can do this by bring the #1cylinder to TDC, also you can put a healthy dose of grease on the pump rod and push it up into the block, the grease will hold it in place plenty long enough for you to put the new pump on.
