Re: Ready to drop my truck in the lake!!!

You might check your harmonic balancer to make sure the timing marks are correct. I saw a new factory harmonic balancer that top dead center (0 degrees) was way off so never assume a new or used one is correct.

Re: Ready to drop my truck in the lake!!!

Hutch949,

That's exactly how mind is too. It sounds awesome and mean when it is at idle and when I rev the motor up. It's all bark and no bite. When I rev it up the motor should want to jump out of the engine bay when I do that.

67Shortie,

The casting number on the heads are 3856206. The intake valve ports are now 2.19 and the exhaust valve ports are set up to work with pump gas.

Re: Ready to drop my truck in the lake!!!

Yah, they are oval port closed-chamber heads. I am hoping since the compression is up the compression is literally blowing the plug out because when I took the plug off it had a weak spark. Besides the only thing that was never touched in the engine bay was the HEI distributor. So I am hoping a new one will do the trick. If not my truck may be an anchor.

Re: Ready to drop my truck in the lake!!!

This may seem kind of silly, but no one has mentioned firing order. Go over that real slow and make sure it's right. It's real easy to switch a couple of wires...even for the veteran mechanics out there.

Re: Ready to drop my truck in the lake!!!

I have not had a chance to get back to it yet since I was waiting for the new distributor to come in. It came in yesterday but I didn't have time to put it in. However; I did have time to show the truck to one of my friends and I noticed my NEW headliner is starting to drop. I thought you f*ck*r!! Anyway, now I have to take that down and remove the glude from the top of my truck, buy another headliner, and install it. It keeps getting better. The firing order is correct because that was the first thing that was checked and rechecked. I am starting to think it may be the wiring harness because I bought both new upper and lower Big Block HEI harnesses from GMC PAUL's. I installed the lower one but not the top one. The top one controls the starter but I have the actual ignintion wire spliced into the truck's switch in the cab so I know for sure it is getting 12 volts. I guess it's one of those things that I will have to try everything. I hope to get to it on Thursday or Friday. Have to go on travel for my job tonight and tomorrow. Other than that things are going great.

Re: Ready to drop my truck in the lake!!!

I finally got that chance to mess around with my truck yesterday. I removed the old HEI distributor and after inspection I found some crackes in the wiring within the distributor. The I proceeded to install the new Procomp one of got off eBay and it made a world of difference. The motor wants to twist out of the engine compartment with I rev it up. It's will burn the tires off when I want to burn out. This is a long, hard, and expensive road so I hope it is worth it when I am done. Next on tap is my Father needs to (in no particulat order) adjust the lifters, set the timing, and inspect the carburator. I need to finish the wirng and purchase some rear disk brakes. All I need is the ca$h and time.

Thank you all for the great advice which kept me from just giving up.

My motor was like that -- sounded fine at idle and would rev great with no load.. was dog-meat under a load...

I replaced my voltage regulator and now she pins your ears back like she's supposed to. Checking your voltages at the dizzy should verify if this is an issue for you.

EDIT: Nevermind.. I see you got it.
