If you want to know how to check a balancer, put a timing light on it. If it's spun, your marks will not line up. Got a light? Easy to check.

I'm still not sure that a spun balancer would do it, a 350 has an equal balance ring, unlike the 400 and 454 with a big counter weight on it. But heck it could be a lot of things, and as OD points out put a light on it and if the pointer is nowhere near rthe line the balancer has slipped and should be changed if for nothing else other than to keep it from comming apart all the way.
