Solution to that problem: Good Grade 8 bolts, washers and locknuts. You'll be hard-pressed to break them off on a 4x4 steering box. If you were REALLY wheeling hard, then yes it may break. But on a DD that might see some off-roading, it would be fine.

The steering box on my truck has about a 3/4-1in. space between it and the frame, and it's been there 40 years. Theres no cracks anywhere on the frame that I can see.
