That is why the "rat rod" 67-72 is a bad idea.

Re: Youngin' With a Million ideas::Ratrod style

hey crazyjdub, i have been thinking alot about your post since you put it on. to each their own is what i say. i think your idea has some merit. i would not start with a great truck, maybe a pretty far gone beater. this is a good way to express your imagination and skills or work on skills. what was a real rat rod? they were no collecters item in the day. my concept of a rat rod was super cheap hotrod using whatever could be found from any car. they had little money to go fast with. strip all weight you can off. i dont know about no front fenders or hood. maybe lose top of fender and side of hood some. be some creative sheet metal involved. go for it. have any ideas, or sketchs yet?
good luck. pkj

Ol-Skool for 67-72 is pretty much taken it back to stock.

Now that's a damn good look!

Re: Youngin' With a Million ideas::Ratrod style

That truck posted up isnt what i had in mind at all, but its a start i supposed. The reason i was thinking of rat rod is just that reason. I bought a 67 gmc 3/4 for 700 bucks and drove it home. The word "beater" almost seems too nice. As a part time worker and full time college student money isnt exactly at hand. Hopefully ill be able to pull of the cheapest yet nicest around here....but im probably just loopy

I dont have any sketches yet, (except for in my head). Im working on getting photoshop to play around with it. The picture i have in my head seems to look good. I know everyone has there own style and likes. Im hoping to change a few minds once i get a few PS projects goin.

My ideas were a lowered, raked gmc. Maybe cut the fenders but do some metal work and make it look so the hood comes down a few inches. Anyone have any ideas? Maybe shape the corner of the cab to round and narrow the front of the truck.

Re: Youngin' With a Million ideas::Ratrod style

the pic was ....eeeeeeh think you need to see the project pics of some members to see wat a cab with wheels frame and engine look like

my idea with the fenderless truck............. i think you need to actually make the cab narrower by sectioning it widhwise to allmost a singleseater and hide delete or relocate a lot of stuff hanging from the firewall .
to make it work whell the wheels track should totally outside the cab and the bed (wish it is on most radrods cause there older cars ) and the engine widh should be about the widh of the firewall .
you could go even more minimalistic by taking the roof and the front windshield off ( saves on a new cut windshield too ) and weld whats left of the doors intoo the rest of the body so you only have a tub left .
raise the floor in it and channel that over the original frame that way you can use all stock suspension and maybe have the engine stick up more
to get the look right you probably need to mount the seatcushons straight to the floor and as far back as you need for legroom pulling the steeringcolumb and gear selector with you as you go back , a blazerbody would work best in my opinion cause theres no wall behind the cab and the bed and frame is shorter
leave the innerfenders in the back at the original place and cut them down to fit the narower body , cut the outerfender around so the edge of the innerfender is the edge of the outer and weld it together so it looks like the fenders were originally screwed on the outside
i would narrow the hood by as mush as you did the cab and weld a small piece of fender onto each side to make it fit the top of the narrowed grille
i've seen a episode of rides with tim taylor in it he had a f@rt truck wish had the hood welded to the fenders and a huge hole cut leaving only the edges of the original hood to expose the engine
that would work too i believe making the car even more minimal but leaving some of the original sidecontour of it

idea's for the trucks and the order of things to do are taking shape and get closer to being realized , a few more months and i be able to start building for real

i complete 2 of the trucks intoo running fashion one custom and one basicly stock the thirth will be sacrificed for parts

Re: Youngin' With a Million ideas::Ratrod style

Hey CrazyJdub!

Just my thoughts. I would keep the front end and everything, but remove the rear fenders if it's a stepside. Otherwise, just rake it severly and paint the truck flat back. Get some red rims, white wall tires, and paint the front trim red or white. On some hotrods with dual headlights (like your GMC) they put red lenses over the inner lights (which I believe to be the high beams). That in itself would be a decent ratrod truck without puking on the front end. ANyway, I've seen this done on a lot of 50's/60's coupes. I seen it on our trucks a few times, looks pretty sweet.

You're in Sacramento? I'm in Vacaville, about an hour away. Anyway, the Vaca pigs aren't too uptight about that sorta stuff. Dunno if it's any different in Sac.

Re: Youngin' With a Million ideas::Ratrod style

Hey, yeah Sac cops are...well your chances are 50/50. I got a ticket while passenger for seatbelt (just removed to get starter on floorboard) while my buddy was doing 85 and cut someone off.......but then I was next a cop with my gmc with headers and a cherrybomb, didnt seem to mind a bit.

Yeah thats what i was thinking. No fenders w/ red rims. raked. And mines a fleet not step so i think it would look really good. You think it would look good with or without the hood? I was thinking the supports lots of the 30's n such have. From corner of cab to radiator.

Re: Youngin' With a Million ideas::Ratrod style

i would shoot myself b4 owning a truck like that. Or i would rip that front end $#!& off and start over. My $.02: take the truck, put a nice engine in it and fix the body and give it a nice paint job, you will be much happier in the end, and you will have a nice daily driver, sat. night cruiser or both. if you have to sell it at some point, (a.k.a. kids) the resale value will be ten times higher

Dude, I say GO FOR IT, DO IT!!! You would definitly need to section the cab and the hood with-wise (as mentioned) to make it look cool. I say use the hood (sectioned) with no fenders and build a cool one off grill\rad support!

I have a '67 "rat style" truck and love it, some cats don't like it (but it's not their truck) and some do!! In the end it's what you like, unless someone is footing the bill~~
