Hey I'll throw my 71 into the mix. I know, I know it's not as beat as some but it fits into this group a heck of a lot better than the other calender trucks! These are the way I bought it in September. Been wrenchin & driving it ever since.

Man, this thread is cool y'all!
Here is my beater that I drive every other day or so. Note the retro cowboy attire it wears down to the "Big Wonderful Wyoming" mudflaps, and the old aluminum running boards.

Keep the "Beaters" comin folks!----DAC

Re: Beater Calender

Folks, these are some GREAT trucks! God, I love a beater - every time I see a "working truck" I start to think I should just leave mine the heck alone.

I would say that to qualify as a "beater" the truck should be running and used. If it's parked, it's not a beater - it's parts storage '-)

Here's mine:

Re: Beater Calender

A truck does not have to be running & driven to be a beater. Wouldnt that be a daily driver or a work truck? I get so confused with all these rules...

No need to rescind, you qualify. That's a beater.

Re: Beater Calender

Here's one thats sure to draw attention, a true "beast" in a Frankensteinian sense. It's a satin black (not sure if it's Krylon or the Wal-mart equivalent) over the OE medium blue. The door has gray primer accents over OE Wheatland yellow. The newly added tailgate with trim and the chrome dog dish hupcaps, give it "bling". The patina you see on this rare specimen comes from years of dried on pine sap drippings from sitting in the woods. Not evident in the pics is a healthy dose of green mold on the lower bedsides giving it the "tropical rain forest" effect. Truely a multi-colored, multi-textural feast for the senses. A one-off, often imitated, never duplicated.

Note also the "rat-rod" red rims. This truck started that trend, as evidenced by the fact they are split rims with 30 year old weather-cracked radials. The coup-de-grace is the subtle use of broken (not sawed off) pressure treated deck railing in the stake pockets. I wanted something that would stand the rigors of New England, yet exude a rugged natural beauty. They've been carefully arranged to portray a Salvidor Dali-esque cognative dissonence.

A little history:

It started out as a low-mileage rust-free vehicle. An optioned out 72 Sierra Grande 3/4 ton 4x4. You know the kind, the one Gramps bought to go RV camping with and died a few years later, and from there it sat. I wanted to do something different so I "rustored" it. I sold or junked all the options and trim (buckets, tach dash, tilt, should belts, etc, etc), ripped off the clean sheetmetal ( I was surprised I didn't need a torch, but used one anyway ) , and proceeded to locate some "well-loved" pieces to replace them. Here it is, after years of work, a labor of love, a one-off rustification. Whadda ya'll think?

Re: Beater Calender

heres mine the guy i got it from didnt want it cuz it didnt run he thought the fuel pump was gone, so me and my friend put a bita gas in it dropped a battery in her and started it up fired up fine barly turned over once then it died after bout 5 seconds then we tried again and found we could make it run for 30 seconds if we pumped it a bit, so we fired it up and pumped like crazy musta been reved like 5k or higher for bout 5 mins and now it will idle un touched for about 1 minute so we cranked the idle speed up and it works fine i think the back brakes are shot and the motor has more power than my every day truck same engine/setup 350 it does one heck of a smoke show tho im gonna trade motors after i fix the beater motor up nice any way enjoy
