Yeah,that`s the whole idea.The trend came from just that,throw a blanket on the seat.It`s all about casual.Something about a custom tailored Mexican blanket seat cover kills the whole concept.It`s like when fashion hits Kmart...it`s dead by the time it becomes easily available to the masses.It`s time to look to the next trend by the time that happens.

I tend to agree but the anal-retentive in me won't let me just throw the blankets onto my bench seat and sit on a bunched up, wrinkled blanket. I have (I think temporarily) installed a Dodge Ram 12 passenger van third row bench seat in my '46. It fits amazingly well except it is rigid. Can't be moved and the back doesn't fold forward. Comfort-wise it is leaps ahead of the stock '46 seat. The upholstery is fine on it too, but I happen to have two new Mexican blankets I used to use as part tablecloths for Cinco de Mayo parties, so....? I guess I'll hog ring them to the existing upholstery.

I am SUPPOSED to be picking up my '46 from the world's longest re-wiring job today. I will be posting a thread on that over the weekend.

Here's a shot of my blanket color, "Serape Black". I lucked out. I just happened to have the predominantly black blankets and my truck is in black primer...for now.

My truck in as-purchased condition, and a shot of it heading to the shop for rewiring....TWO friggin months ago! Oh well, it's my fault. I added new gauges and a few other things to the process which added time. Apologies for the crappy cell phone pictures. - Dan

I meant custom tailored "store bought".I guess I left that out.Nothing wrong with making something from scratch.Ever consider buying a loom and some yarn?

Now we`re really talkin`"from scratch"!

How about growing your own cotton?

a little tuck here and there, and a couple of zip ties, and viola! bought my sarapes off of Ebay. make sure you buy the softer combed cotton instead of the wool! trust me.

I'm getting ready to do this and have the blankets already.

Questions: Two blankets? One for the seat and one for the back?
Did you poke holes in the blankets to use the zip ties? Wouldn't it be best to install some of those brass grommets so the fabric wouldn't tear through? Or did you wrap fabric around the seat hardware and then use the zip ties to hold it on a seat frame piece? I'm hoping once I get my seat out and flipped over it will mostly be obvious.

yep two blankets, folded in two. took the back off the seat and overwrapped the blanket and used zip ties (usually can just poke them through the material) and secured them to the frame. leave a bit of slack in the zip ties to allow for a little movement.

the next one I do, I want to insert a steel rod at the end to secure to.... it would allow for a tighter fit without the blanket bunching up around the zip tie.

The steel (or maybe aluminum) rod idea is a good one. It would give a more taut appearance after it is installed. On the other hand, its kinds contrary to the whole funky look of the blankets....but I don't have a problem with that. I want to be proud of anything I do to my truck and not end up with something that looks like an unmade bed

Incidentally, there's not a lot of Hispanic households here in SoCal that doesn't have one of them either. Mine were for party table clothes. Kinda like, uh...er.....those little corn on the cob fork handles in Iowa...I guess. Ha ha.
