Re: 1972 Custom 10 4X4 $450.00

Thats less than what I paid for mine, and it doesnt have the engine or trans. BUY IT! Your gonna be kicking your self down the road if you dont.

With these trucks, minimal cash into getting them decent, and you can make a huge profit selling it. And think, your gonna spend maybe 700 total, for truck and a trans like these guys mentioned... What other car can you buy for 700? -cough-crappyones-cough-

Re: 1972 Custom 10 4X4 $450.00

Update: I talked with my wife tonight and showed her all of your posts. Thanks to everyone for the positive replies. I think it worked. She told me that if I want to get it that bad, "then FINE!" Sounded like a yes to me! I am looking forward to getting it home, but it is a tad bit fridged in Michigan this week. I am not sure how much longer it will last in that parking lot though. Hopefull I will get it on Sunday.
I am definitely going to need some of all of your knowledge on the transmission fix though. I have heard that some of these came with th400s, is that true? My buddy didn't have a clue. Where should I look to find a replacement? I could take it to the place in Mid Ohio that Long Horn Man was talking about. My brother lives in Mt Vernon and I will be down that way at the end of the month. Thanks again HONESTLY!!!! I will post some pics when I pick it up!!

Re: 1972 Custom 10 4X4 $450.00

Buy it and get the tranny rebuilt by the guy recommended above. You will enjoy the truck and at that price, it is a steal even if it is a bit rusty. BTW, what condition is the body of the truck?

Re: 1972 Custom 10 4X4 $450.00

So it sounds like you are going to buy it.
I'm going to give you advice I give to everybody comtemplating dropping the tranny and/or transfer case out of a 4x4.

The seal for the back of the th350 in that configuration is in the "adapter". The adapter is the very heavy piece of iron between the tranny and x-fer case. The forward seal in the adapter keeps tranny fluid in the tranny, off your drive way/garage floor, and out of the transfer case. Tranny fluid in an NP205 won't hurt it but you don't want to pull that thing twice.

Be prepared for the adapter to be cracked. You can still get a new one from a Chevy garage. They aren't cheap but they are OEM and fit perfect.

Then look at the "drive sleeve". The drive sleeve couples the tranny to the transfer case and rides around on the seals in the adapter. It is similar to the front oil seal on a small block Chevy in that over time a groove can be worn into it. You guessed it, it can leak there too. The drive sleeve is also available at the counter of your favorite Chevy garage. Look over the splines on the old drive sleeve too. When I pulled my 3-speed that drive sleeve was twisted enough that I would have replaced it had I put it back on the truck. (I put a th350 in there so I didn't re-use that piece because they are not the same).

If the adapter and drive sleeve are ok, consider replacing the seals in that old adapter.

You really don't want to horse that stuff out and in more than once. I look at it this way. It worked ok for 30 years. If you freshen all that stuff up it should go another 30.

One more thing. If you find yourself at the parts counter looking for those two parts don't be discourage if he doesn't have a book listing 1972 4x4 parts. GM used that tranny/adapter/transfer case in later models. I don't remember what exact year I specified but they did find my parts listed under a mid 70s Blazer. Except for the crack in my old adapter the parts were identical.

Re: 1972 Custom 10 4X4 $450.00

Thanks Mrein3! Priceless info. I plan on waiting until warmer weather to do anything though. That might even give my wife enough time to cool down.

BTW for Yukon Jack... The body is in pretty good shape for being 35 years old. This truck was repainted around 13 years ago. The painter didn't do a great job but only a few rust bubbles are showning through on the fenders. The rear bumber is shot and as I stated before, when the new paint was put on the wood in the bed was replaced. Since then, this truck has always had a topper on. My buddy always had it full of junk boxes and stuff so I actually haven't seen the wood but he says it is still in great shape.

I am not into porn...but my old Navy buddy is...and I have to tell you...I have spent a lot more on my truck than he has for porn.

These things are addictive and it is hard to kick the habit...I have had three now.

Re: 1972 Custom 10 4X4 $450.00

Well I picked up the truck yesterday. Here in Michigan it was 14 degrees with a pelting snow blowing across the parkinglot at about 35 MPH. Not a lot of fun getting it loaded on the car hauler but an experience I won't forget. On the way home we entered numerous white out conditions... SCARY when you are trailering anything!! Got the truck home in one peice though. My four year old daughter came out to see and informed me that I bought an "ugly" truck. Once it warms up I will take and post some pics. I woke up this morning to take some pics and the thermometer said -4 degrees. I shut the door and climed back under the covers.

Buy It! Like Krue said, you can always sell it back to him later. It's a win-win situation. Wives do eventually get over it. Well I just posted before I saw your last post, glad to hear you got it and that you got it home safely.

Re: 1972 Custom 10 4X4 $450.00

dude.... "then fine" isn't actually a yes! I've been married for 9 years and it translates into "no sex for you buster!"

Yes it will be a money pit, but so is a new truck with 60+ payments!

Here would be my pitch..
1. $450 is a steal and it helps your buddy out (true)
2. You'll only work on it and buy parts once a month (white lie)
3. These classic trucks are increasing in demand and price (true)
4. You can ride to car shows and get a thumbs up from everyone (true)

Get her involved with the project and it will help, my wife can now tell the difference between model years and know what parts look original.. Good luck

Re: 1972 Custom 10 4X4 $450.00

I second that... keep thoughts of that truck dancing in your head cuz it will be a while before you get any... Im getting married in June and I allready have that issue.. I sold my 63 two summers ago (only truck she really liked, but the money for it was rediculous!), towed it to the cites and a new owner and made the mistake of driving by one of my favorite jyards with an empty trailer onthe return trip... ended up bringing back the ugliest 72 K20 ever... no love for me for 3 weeks... but is was SOOOOO worth it... AND i keep bringing up when she gets frusterated with my truck/car thing.. she did say "yes"....

msgross... on a side note, I just noticed (takes me a while) that your livin in lebanon (lepnin for the locals)... I used to live in Womelsdorf as a kid, graduated from Weiser in '92, and after a degree from Millersville, attended Ball State in Muncie, IN for my grad degrees!!! small world... good luck to the colts this afternoon...

I'm with msgross on the "then fine" thing. 99% of the time "then fine" really means NO, but you're gonna do it anyway; so there will be paybacks.

Hey Chevyfarmer, looks like we are just about neighbors. I live in Swartz Creek.
If you know any good junkyards around here for parts give me a holler. I am looking for a TH350 4x4 transmission to start things off... once the weather warms up. Everyschool in mid michigan was closed today due to dagerous temps... except UM flint. Jerks!
