Re: Where did you find your first truck????

My grandpa's yard. My uncle drove it up from SC, blew a brake line, left it in NY for my grandpa to sell, I wanted it, I bought it. Ended up moving to SC in '99, go figure?

I paid $1,400 for it in 1996, may seem like a lot, but it had new brakes, tires, and a mostly rust free body (all the other trucks my dad and I looked at were "shot" NY trucks.) I was able to plate it and drive it as is for many years with very minor repairs. Great truck for a 16 year old to learn on.

Re: Where did you find your first truck????

A neighbor had a 72 3/4 ton that he told me he was thinking about selling. Luckily that was right at tax time and the $800 we were gettin back was just enough to buy the truck. Because I have such a wonderful wife who let me buy it, I've been hooked on these years ever since. I traded my 69 Chevelle for my bro-in-law's 68 snb while I still had the 72 and then traded the 72 for the 67 Chevelle project.

It was my 68. I saw it in town w/ 4sale sign, called the guy and traded him a 92 blazer that I paid 200 for.

Re: Where did you find your first truck????

I bought my 72 short wheel base step side in 79 for $795.00 from the Dept of Defense Suruplus Supply. I picked it up at Westover Airforce Base, in Chicapee MA. Had to do some minor body work, rockers, front body mounts, interiod floor. Drove it for a few years then bought a 72 swb 4x4 that had a real need for a lot of body work so is swapped frames and then had a 4x4. Sold the other 2wd for more that I paid for the 4X4.

Re: Where did you find your first truck????

Had about 6 - 8 foreign & newer chevy trucks in a remodeling-contracting business. All were nearly beat to death by construction jobsite work.

Have to say the Toyotas held up about as good as the Chevys, (both were better than the Nissans) and the Toyotas were a whole lot better on gas, and only marginally higher than the chevys to repair. Sorry --- not a traitor - just stating fact. On the bright side, the one Furd I had was a complete POS.

"Truckless" for several years, after I got out of construction, and then: Found my true-love '68 short stepside thru a collector-car dealer & friend, who helped locate it for me.

No more trucks planned, but I keep being tempted, now that I've got what I think may be a full-blown case of the sickness................................

And now that I've got one, I'm always seeing the ones I passed-by before.

Re: Where did you find your first truck????

i was driving down a street in my town and saw it sitting there for sale...didn't stop and the next day i went back and it was gone.....2 months later it was back in front of that house and i took it home with me that day for 2500, the guy was asking 6000 for it and i think thats why it didn't sell cause there were some major problems.

Re: Where did you find your first truck????

I was looking for a 68 to restore ( that's the year I was born ) Seen one at a junk yard so I stopped in to look at it. It's wasn't even worth messing with. The guy running the junk yard ask me if my heart was set on a 68, I ask him why, he said I've got a 70 swb I'm think about selling. I told him I look at it but in the back of my mind if it needed a lot of work, well I would just keep looking for a 68. He said he would bring it from home the next day. Me and my boss went out for lunch and after eating we stopped by to look at it. When he showed it to me and my eyes lit up like a kid in a candy store. It was in really good shape and run great. A very clean truck.I went over the truck with a magnet and only found a little bondo. The floor board had mininum rust no holes.I talked to him back and forth for a couple of days and we agreed on a price. I was leaving work early to go get it and my boss pulled me to the side and gave me check to buy it with. He said it was a little something for the 18 years I'd been with him................

Re: Where did you find your first truck????

I was searching on "Cars.com" and all that jazz and eventually found it. I actually bought it from a dealership up in Roseville, CA. At thetime, she wasn't very pretty to look at so they kept her BEHIND the dealership. First time Inoticed the truck was when I accidently passed it and noticed it at the last minute, I just about flipped out I was so excited. This is the oldest picture I have. Comparison:

And then the most recent:

I just drove around town until I saw one I liked sitting in a guy's backyard. There are still lots of these trucks up here, but they are all lwb's and rusty.

Re: Where did you find your first truck????

I had been looking in the AutoTrader, but found my baby/beast of burden on the side of Hwy 14 in Prattville. It was just sitting out on an empty corner with the fadedn remains of a For Sale sign on it.

I agreed to buy it... if it made it to my house.

Re: Where did you find your first truck????

Since I was 14 I'd been looking through the classifieds for a truck. When I was 15 there was one in the paper for a little more than I wanted to spend but I had to look at it anyways. Turns out it was owned by a guy my dad went to high school with and it was a great truck. A 72 Cheyenne, Custom Camper, Longhorn, in really good condition. He came down on the price. It was probably worth 3 or 4 times what I paid for it. The bad thing is, I couldn't afford to pay for the gas so had to drive a car my parents had. I still have the truck.

Re: Where did you find your first truck????

I found it on ebay, but did not buy it that way. I had looked at alot of rusted up trucks for big $. It is pretty common for trucks this old to be rusted up in the midwest. I looked for about 2 months then saw this 1970 stepside on ebay. The auction ended and the minimium was not met. It was located in the rolling hills of Southern Indiana. I called the guy and went and looked at it. Floors we ok and just some rust underneath. It had been driven on dirt roads most of its life and seen very little salt. He wanted $2500 for it and I got him down to $1800 and bought it. Been sinking money in it ever since (like all of us), but really enjoy working on it and driving a "different" vehicle than everyone else.

Re: Where did you find your first truck????

I have owned many trucks in my life-time, seven in all. All of them used as daily drivers.

I bought my first truck in 1962 when I was 16, a 1956 3/4 ton long bed step-side Ford with a 292 V-8 and three on the tree from a garage in the small town I lived close to in S.E. Missouri. I was 16 at the time.

I bought my last truck in August of 2006, it is a 1971 C-10 long bed with a 1970 Camaro 350, compound 4 speed with 3.73 gears. It is mostly stock except for the engine and dual exhausts. I bought it from HiTech Auto repair in Cape Girardeau, Mo. I was lucky and only paid what they had in it for the repairs they did, $600. While checking it over I have found that it was in Arizona until 2000 and sometime before then had undergone some restoration.

Re: Where did you find your first truck????

i found mine in at my mother in law's aparment complex. the guy downstairs had it for a few months, and he and i would talk trucks when we saw each other when i was there dropping off or picking up my son.

one day, he came up to my window while the wife was taking the boy upstairs, and said ... "hey man, you want to buy my truck?" he asked $800 for it, and it took me about 2 seconds to say yes.
