I just got my renewal the other day and it's $23.57. The Ad Valorem is $2.57
Guess they don't think she's worth too much

Re: California registration SUCKS!!
The way it was explained to me is that if I can get the weight on my truck down to less than 4001 lbs, my weight tax drops to $24. (vice $80) You fill out some paper and have the truck weighed at a certified scale.
Is it possible to get a one-ton down to under 4001 lbs? (I can't remember what it weighed last dump run, I thought it was 5160...... Bill in SD

Re: California registration SUCKS!!
The widely varying Cali fees have me confused. Must be the difference in county/district fees. As I understand it, there is a weight fee change at every 1,000#. Mine is listed at DMV as 4900#.
In 30 years, my tags bottomed out at $49 and thanks to increasing fees, is currently $133. The breakdown is reg. fee $41, license fee $5, weight fee $80, and county fee $7. Threads like this always make me wish I was back in Oregon again...

Re: California registration SUCKS!!
That is my property tax on the truck, valued at $250 by the state. I have a permenant antique tags that never expire, one time fee od $75 to register and get the plates, then it is taxes only from then on. You are not suppossed to drive it daily which I don't, but who cares right?

Yep we sure do, that 63 cents is my property taxes on the truck. No registration fees any more. See my post right above this one for clarification.

Re: How much is your registration?
Geno, something is not right. Olden Days weight fee was $80, as was mine. Others are less (but their trucks may be lighter). Everything about yours seems out of line. Post up the breakdown of your fees, maybe things will start to make sense. Like manimal said, it may be worthwhile to strip all you can from the truck and have it weighed.

Re: California registration SUCKS!!
I just bought a truck that hasn't been registered since 2002. I had to write a check for back fees and sales tax to DMV for $524. Bastards!

Of course, they're gonna get sales tax from you -- which I disagree with, it was already taxed when sold new, I don't feel it should also be taxed every time it is re-sold... but that's a whole 'nother issue!

Re: California registration SUCKS!!
Well, it's $330.00 to be exact. And to all the non-believers just give me the STEP BY STEP instructions on how to put the image up on this thread and I'd be more than happy to show you. I've already scanned and saved it to my computer in "my documents" folder.

Re: California registration SUCKS!!
You guys complaining about California should be ashamed of yourselves...Look at all the cool things this state has to offer. There's......Well, there's.......Um.....Oh well, we have HOT CHICKS But I'm married so all I get to do is look anyways
California is the breeding grounds for laws that "F*&K" with peoples rights to own, tinker or operate older cars. Have high taxes, high gas prices (just paid $3.75 gal to put gas in the Avalon, cost $54 to fill it ) as well as every dipsh!t law there is to make it illegal to modify a vehicle. Plus, I found out today while taking a practice license test online (my Son is getting his permit soon) that driving with your parking lights on is ILLEGAL, anytime of the day...ILLEGAL!!! What kind of BS is that? But at least we have HOT CHICKS Mike |

I got notified to garnish one of my employees wages for back DMV fees a couple years ago. I had never heard of that until then. That is just plain crazy and I dont see how they have the right (but they do). If a guy wants to let his vehicle registration expire and then pay back dues when and "IF" he wants to get it on the road that should be his choice. But now days if you dont put it on non-op right away they will come take your money and there is nothing you can do about it. You Kali guys take heed, If your project is going to be sitting for awhile dont the reg expire. Get it on NON-OP Last edited by Olden Days; 05-05-2007 at 11:38 AM. |

Re: California registration SUCKS!!
My truck has been Non-Op since I first registered is nearly 2 years ago, I had seen and heard the effects of not paying the registration on time. When I first went to pick it up with a trailer, I was told that I better not dolly it....California will TAX you for towing it with a dolly if 2 if more tires of said vehicle touches California roads. The only way to prevent being hit with the taxes or surcharges is to put it on a flatbed, a flatbed trailer or flat out LIE. It does not matter if the truck is Non-Op or not.....WTF???

Never had heard of the CA registration laws until now. Makes me appreciate my one time fee collector plates. Just registered recently, just picked it up it hadn't been registered for years....

Re: California registration SUCKS!!
I’m eligible to register my truck for the horseless carriage tag (35 years & older) it cost $5. for a 5year tag.
This is how I’m getting back at the state for making me smog my cars for all these years. s/t

Re: California registration SUCKS!!
Why didn't you just non-op it? How many notices did you receive before the DMV garnished your wages?

Re: California registration SUCKS!!
I got one notice from the dmv. I didn't put a non-op on it because it didn't break down till after the registration was due. And to the "clearly shows penalties" guy it doesn't show the original fee which is still close to the 300 dollar mark like I originally stated. The California laws are ridiculous. I agree that if you don't put it back on the road you shouldn't have your wages garnished like I did. And, on top of that I was pulled over with those expired tags, and lacking proff of insurance at the time so my ticket was $1549.00 and not able to pay there requested 275.00 a month now my license is suspended. I know some people will say "you just gotta pay it man" but with the "old fires" in oct. 2003 destroying my house and everything I ever owned, and what liitle I could save caught fire in the back of my truck while trying to save my home, thus becoming homeless, then job less, it is a difficult road to get back on and I'm trying if california would keep it hands out of my pocket. Sheesh.

Re: California registration SUCKS!!
i'm not sure, but i think the weight fee is a one-time thing, or also upon transfer of title. i was able to talk my way out of it with the gal at DMV because the previous pink slip (dated 1995) still showed the declared weight of the truck, which hadn't been modified. after paying 2 years of back fees, blah blah blah, it cost me around 300 clams. again, NO weight fee.

As I posted earlier, my K20 is listed at 4900# and this year's weight fee is $80. That's why I suggested to Geno that something must be wrong, as he said his weight fee is $158. If it were me paying it, I would look into that...

Re: California registration SUCKS!!
So it was still drivable, you just let the registration expire? Then you were driving it without current registration or insurance?
