Well I voted for KY but MISSOURI would work out for me and is probably the most logical choice. My only problem is it would have to be in April, May, September, or October. Hope we can get this to work. Sound like it would be a great time. We could even setup cruises for on the way to and from the meet. I know there are some members in MI, OH, IN, PA & IL that we could set up times to meet along the way. Hey at least then we would have plenty of spare tires & parts for the trip

I also voted for the mid west! I live no where near it but am willing to make the sacrafic to try and get there! I mean I think the mid west would be the best because it is centrally located! Like I said before I'm no where even close the the mid west, It would take me about 24 hours of driving to get out there and that driving at 80 mph!....................I hope this all works out, I think it would be really cool to have one big get togeather, or even 2 or maybe 3 small get togethers! well thats my .02!

I think that Missouri would be a great place to have the show. Heck, why not right here in Columbia? There is plenty of space at the county fair grounds. They have plenty of buildings and parking. Just my teo cents.

Start with regionals so everyone has at least a reasonable opportunity to participate. It will take not only an organizer with some common sense, but with definate organizational skills, along with some serious backing from vendors, etc. It's not easy to make something like this happen, but it can definately be accomplished. As great as it sounds, in reality most of us would be hard pressed to just jump in our truck and head out across the country to an all-inclusive gathering at X location on X day. It would be fantastic if we could, I agree, but still it is not very likely. But it is viable to discuss and maybe even set the groundwork to build towards the "The Great 67-72 Truck Event". It would have to be one hell of a good time, without a doubt!

Missouri would obviously be best for me but I doubt anyone from Florida or Califiornia, for example, would drive that far. I'd say have regional shows, so that nobody has to drive more than lets say 8 hours. Then if the turn-outs were big, the number of shows could be then reduced.

From what alot of people have said, I feel the best thing to do is split into regions. More people would go if it was not a 10 hour drive. If somebody who could drive great distances wanted to go to other regions than that is up to them. I will help set one up in my region. I know one thing, when you get about 20 board members(Like Pigeon Forge) together you will have a good time. just my .02

My vote is for regional events.
As a former member of a car club that hosted a large yearly show.....this is a much bigger job than you can imagine. This will require at least 20-25 people working together to make it successful. Divide up into teams and let each team have certain resonsibilities (concessions, vending, judging, etc). I would think you would need at least a year to organize a "national" show....whereas, a regional show would require much less time, people and money to organize. You can then make it either a competitive show or just a loosely organized gathering of board members. As the host, you will need to: 1.) reserve space for the show (fairgrounds, state park, city park, etc....) 2.) investigate lodging options (enough local hotel/motel rooms, camping facilities, etc...) 3.) arrange sponsors (for classes, trophies, door prizes, etc...) 4.) arrange for vending (T-shirts, caps, trophies, dash plaques, etc....) 5.) arrange judging (volunteers, paid judges, etc....) 6.) concessions (folks gotta eat and drink.....) 7.) local attractions (folks are gonna want something to do at night, after the show...) 8.) entry fee to cover "costs" (you dont charge enough-your in the hole....you charge too much-folks think your just trying to make money off of them....) ...these are just a few things involved in organizing a large scale show. Something to think about, schedule the show on a holiday weekend (Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc...) that way folks that want to attend will have Monday to travel home without using up valuable vacation time from work. The most successful shows are usually 2 day shows - Saturday morning for registration and vehicle clean up - Saturday afternoon for judging - Sunday morning for awards - Sunday afternoon for cruising and traveling back home These are just a few suggestions that I can think of......something else to consider, organize a "meeting place" (lunch, dinner, a cook out, etc...) at one of the shows already taking place-Pigeon Forge maybe....kinda like some of the guys did this year. A cook out at a local park would be a real good time at such an event. Let me know if i can help out ...... Last edited by Shane; 09-19-2002 at 11:06 AM. |

If it is planned out far enough in the future people can plain it out. Heck we just had the National Street rods come here to Kalamazoo MI and there where cars from almost every state in the union. It just has to be well planned and then become an annual event with the same close date each year. Like the old saying if your build it they will come. And once it has a few years under its belt it will grow.

I've been around car shows and clubs my entire life, and it would have to be regional. Understanding that the first year resources and such might be limited because no-one really knows how turnouts are going to be but, try and maybe use Super Chevy's event schedule for example, and just cut out the unnecessary places that are closer than say 400 miles apart.? I am in New Mexico, so I'm within range of Albuquerque, Phoenix(HOT!), or Denver. Super Chevy comes to both Phoenix and Denver, and I'm about 300+ miles from Denver, and usually make that one my choice.
I'm all for it, and I think it's a great idea. If it were to be a success, it would make this era of trucks even more popular, perhaps then popularity would exceed say tri-5 cars and first gen camaros?!! |

Discriminating against yankees again I see!
We could have an event in maine, the competition could be to see who has the most bondo, or holes in the frame. It'd be a wicked decent times, I tell ya!

one centrally located show would be great but i definately agree that 3 or 4 different ones would get more than twice the amount of trucks. personally im willing to drive a good 5-600 miles, but thats not gonna get me there
but if we decide to split em up into 3 or 4 different locations, ill be more that happy to help put together the west coast show

We are not going to let this Idea Die are we? I have the room here in MI to have a meeting here. Probably not the best location, nor have I ever organized anything like this, but I have a flat grass area of about 4.5 acres. It is kept mowed. I could not have an open to the public show and sell things, but a meet with board members cannot be stopped by the local township rules. It's a start!

gabet40, Pleasanton would be a great location. Actually, anywhere near the center of Cali would be great. Helps to split the distance for those traveling. I'm in Southern Oregon but wouldn't hesitate to make that drive South or as far as Portland going North. Seattle would be a bit far for me. If we had 2 West coast meets, San Jose or Portland would be the best 2 locations to attract the most members in my opinion.
As far as one National meet goes, I can almost gaurantee I wouldn't make it because of the distance to a centralized location that would benifit most members. Not that anyone would care if I showed or not

It needs to be somewhere central to everybody in the US. If you put it on one coast or the other you will be excluding many people from the opposite coast. If you have it in the summer which makes sense you do not want to go to far south for those that have no AC, so Nebraska or Kansas is pretty good choices.

but if we just have one central show, we wont get nearly the turn out compared to split shows. some one from the central US and east coast needs to step up and try gettin a show together in their region

Do we really need vendors there? Look at the people that voted for it, if everybody came that voted there wouldn't be 100 trucks there. Why don't we just try out a certain place or places for the first year just for everybody to go to and hang out. No judging, or concessions or vendors. Just make sure we are going to have enough trucks. Then talk about what else we could do. It would suck to have all the vendors and concessions there and only 100 trucks show up. Could we plan this with a car show that is already happening? That way there won't be a big hassle for people that have to set it up and vendors and concessions and judging stuff would already be there. We would just take up alot of space ourselves and still be able to hang out all day. Just we wouldn't have to do all the work. Just my .02 though

72chevy has a point, i wasnt really thinkin along the lines of a big show with vendors, judges, and all that either. but to base the # of trucks that are showin up off of an online survey or board isnt gonna cut it either. once we establish a date and location, we'll switch to mailing and confirmations and flyers and advertising and contact numbers so that anyone that has a truck like ours can show up, board member or not.
of course therell be some sponsorship calls made and hopefully a few parts manf. showing up, but with all the parts weve got layin around our yards i was thinkin we could just bring them and have our own mini-swap meet at the same time. thatll especially work well if we advertise enough and have the public come check it out the trucks and maybe pick up some 67-72 parts for themselves. joinin up with a car show already planned is another option. does anyone have a list of shows already taking place?
