Re: The next LFD How-To!

Hey Kevin, you used a dirty word..."Spare" time....do you actually have any of that? Or are you buying "Time offsets" like the "Carbon offsets" that's all the rage now.

By the way, how's that radiator repair you did for Low Buck holding up?

I forgot about that repair, so I guess it is holding fine. I have checked for PSI in the system and it holds just fine.

And yes I buy the off sets from my parent company and I get a good rate at the same time.

Re: The next LFD How-To!

Damb I have over 60 pics of this mod

Here are a few more showing my first lead work. I fit the hood today and it is close but I will have a little bit more melting and spooning to get the passinger side front gap just right.

What do you think?

Re: The next LFD How-To!

Well I spent some time yesterday getting it all finished up ( fit to this truck) and primmed. Turns out now that I have gone back thru my notes I have about 30 hrs into this hood. If I had done all mig welding and bondo not Tig and lead than it would be more around 15-20 hrs. I think the front gap turned out real well and all it needs now is a few block sandings and paint once the rest of the truck gets done But for now the hood part is done and I have all the build pics swaped over to this computer so I will try and work on the How-To tonight because the wife will be at her parents so I will have some free time

Looks killer Kevin.

I don't know if it's just me...... but in the pics, that primer w/guide coat is kind of camouflaging the 'impact' the mod has on smoothing the look of the later front end.

The gap was 'eliminated' to work w/the later style full grill-shell. He used the lip from the 69 & later hood & combined it w/a 67/8 hood.

Close, I built my own front lip using 1/8" steel rod and lead to get a better gap. The 69-72 front lip leaves to big of a gap because of how the hood is designed to come in. I did use the 69-72 latch section from a donor hood.

Re: The next LFD How-To!

I have a 69 GMC hood and front grill. Is the gap the reason it looks as if there was a trim piece there? I know on my 1970 Chevy there was no trim piece.

Sweet, Kevin, as always.
The shops around here won't use lead any more, they say the rust problms from the lead won't hold up? I bet you figured out a way....
Thanks again for sharing your terrific work and ideas!

The 69 GMC and 70 chevy hoods are the same. On the GMC the 3 wide chrome pieces (2 on fenders, 1 on top of grill) fill the gap. On the chevy the way the grill surround is designed fills the gap.

So the 67 hood bolts right on but there is a gap? Do you have pictures of the hood unmodified on the newer nose?

Actually, no. It won't even close. The 67-68 hoods hang lower than 69-72, their leading edge is actually part of the grill (kinda) while the 69-72 hoods tuck behind the grill. I think that makes sense?

Great work Kevin. That's how they should have come from the factory!

Re: The next LFD How-To!

So you took a 67 hood skin off and put it on the inner frame work of a 70 hood and then used rod to fill the gap between the hood and the grill? I love the look of the 67 hood thats for sure...

Just the very front section of the hood structure. The rear section is fine left alone.
