Question about stock fans?

This is what I'm going to do later this summer. I already have the fan, 35.00 shipped off of EBAY, now I need a controller &/or diagram to hook it up. Look Here!!

I've put a Taurus fan in my TJ & just used a 50 amp switch, fuse & 30 amp breaker hooked straight to the battery, so I have to turn it on & off & not forget about it when I'm in traffic or stopped idling. But the breaker cycles continuously once it gets hot so I'm going to step up to a 50 amp breaker & see how that works out.

It's funny though, the cycling doesn't happen if I have the engine off, just when it's running. It's weird. I don't get it.

I'll spend a little more money & effort on the blazer, to get the maxima fan to work & look halfway decent, but I need to be able to steer it before I worry about that so much.

Also, I don't think that 210-220 is really too bad. Most vehicle's nowadays run that hot from the factory, (helps with fuel efficiency & EFI controls), so as long as you keep an eye on it I think you'll be OK. But no blaming me if it blows up!!

Definately, drove it again last night to be sure with the A/C blasting. Even going steady at only 35 mph the temp dropped right down to 190 within a minute or two. At lights it climbed to 210-215.


I'm running a 185 degree thermostat and even before I installed the A/C the truck ran consistently at 190.

I'm going to go to two 'yards that I know of to see what I can find. My pops said 80's Caprices and trucks should have what I need. I hope I can find something, most yards around here only have "newer stuff."

Thanks for the tip buddy, I'd like to use that as a last resort though (I'm tired of installing crap on this truck ) That's also what my dad suggested if the 7 blade clutch fan doesn't work.

My Z71's normal operating temp is 200 degrees. What concerns me is the temp spike on my truck. If it was consistently 200 to 205 I wouldn't worry (both open road and no traffic) but because it's jumping from 190 to 220, that concerns me, and it was only 94 out, it gets MUCH hotter here!

Thanks for the help everyone, I'm going to try to find a used 6 or 7 blade GM clutch fan. I'll have to measure mine, but I think it's 17 or 18 inches.

I got a "it sure looks new to me" stock 7 blade clutch fan from member RaulDuke. Finally got it on the truck yesterday... It seems to be working! It feels like it has about 3 times the pull through the radiator than the flex fan did, plus I'm not scared to be under the hood with the engine running anymore

The other thing I really like is how QUIET my truck is now. That flex fan was loud! I can hear the exhaust now when I accelerate instead of the roar of the fan

The truck did get warm, (from about 195-200) but my radiator cap is bad an leaking??? I need to get a new one!

(sorry if i am hijacking this) i just bought the gen ii compact unit for my truck (72 chevy2wd) & i know somewhere you started a ac build thread, i am wondering if you would be kind to show me the location of the build thread?? also i was wondering if in the thread you show or describe how exactly you mounted the actual unit to your truck?? thanks for any help... i am running electric fans & so i can't give you much help on your fan question.

I started it, but I've only gotten so far as removing the radiator I don't have free time anymore I hope to get back to it sometime this week.

I used the vintage air sure fit kit, I don't know if that's the gen II or not? It used stock holes in the dash and firewall to mount. Here's a couple pics. The mount under the dash was an existing hole, the mount on the left side of the unit (the pic with the spacer) mounts to an existing hole near the middle of the firewall where the heater unit was, and the mount in the back was mocked up and a hole was drilled. The directions said to use an existing hole, but there sure as hell wasn't one anywhere near that bracket in my truck! So I drilled a new one

Glad to see that fan is doing a lot more good now than it was taking up room on my garage floor!
