Will this work? (or miserably fail)

This is what I wound up doing on my son's truck.

Got rid of tabs on the driver's side of the tank and rounded one end of the square hole with a dremel


Drilled and tapped an aluminum plate 7/16-14. It doesn't show it but the final assembly got nuts on the back to lock the bolts


1 1/2" spacers


Had to drill 1 extra hole in the side of the frame for the forward j-bolt. I used an old inner tube from a 26" 10speed bike between the frame/tank/straps

I think next time I'll get rid of the tabs from both sides and insert a long bolt down through the frame on the passenger side, tighten the straps and lock with a bolt on top and bottom of the strap. The j-bolts were a real pain.

Exactly why I have my truck in an LLC. Among other things.

Privay and Asset Protection. The only remedy is the insurance pay out. Exactly where I want them to go.

I can't stand being batted around like a toy.

71Tahoe: Is it just the camera angle, or isn't that tank low enough that a flat (especially a blowout) will put the tank bottom onto the pavement ???

I'm planning a rear tank, too, but it looks to me like it really HAS to be mounted higher up to the bottom of the tank than an imaginary string-line drawn bewteen the two rear wheel rims, or a flat on one (or Heaven forbid, both) of the rear tires would cause you to drag the bottom out of the tank, while you're also making lotsa sparks.

A bad combination...............

the only way a blowout would cause the tank to drag is if you drove it aired out. right now the axle is nearly against the frame, which i doubt that he will be driving at that height.

It's on the bump stops with about 2.5" clearance. It "should be" about 4-6" higher at ride height but he's only 17 and knows everything (already planning a skidplate when he needs to be planning not to have to use it). When it's done, whatever he tears up he has to fix. (I will require an extinguisher though )

I forgot to mention, I'll be replacing the bolts I used with fully threaded bolts. The front side needed a tad more to fully level with the frame.

That looks like it'll work. You might want to put nuts above the straps too when you get the fully threaded bolts. That way the lockwashers will compress.

Thanks for posting your pics and for the advice (everyone's). I'm buliding this truck for my now 4 year old son too. I'm hoping he'll treasure it as an adult. That is why I want to make sure my build is clean as well as safe. Thanks again.

I wouldn't bolt it to the frame then. Strapping it is the only way to go. I realy mean only. If you bolt it to the frame in any manner, you are bolting something that isn't flexible to something that is and will flex. Straps or not, the tank will fail. WES

Happy to hear from you Wes. My tank came with no mounting instructions. Can you post them please? My blazer conversion kit only came with one pair of J-hooks and the straps. I'm in aw as to how to properly mount it. I've seen other threads, but most useb materials not inclued in the kit. Thanks again Wes.
