Re: What did they do?

Want to make $10 back, you dont need them tow hooks

The correct set up is what is in the bed except that 4spd tranny is from a 2wd,not a 4wd.You could use that if you had a divorced transfer case and then use a driveshaft to connect the tranny to the t-case.But,that 4spd as it is wont work with that t-case.I dont see the adapter for the 205 either and the one from the 203 wont work.If the truck has the original cab and it is a original 4wd it has a high hump floor which means the tranny hump bolts in.
I dont know why the transfer case is that low unless the cab has been swapped with a low hump cab and it had to be lowered to clear the floor. As for the 2 holes on the passenger side. Those are for a torque mount on the 205 but a 203 should line up with the torque bracket if it was there and the transfer case was where it needed to be.On the fugly years (73-87) they had rods going from the holes to the bellhousing area and no torque bracket. If you want to go back to 4spd,you will need a 4wd version 4spd,the adapter unless its there and not pictured, etc. If you want to convert to auto I still recommend swapping in a 205 which means swapping adapters and transfer cases, adding the torque mount and putting the crossmember back together and where it should be..I do see the correct shifter for the np205 in the bed though so thats one less thing to buy...
And the transfer cases vary from auto to manual, the spline count is different.Either way,if you use a np205 which is what is in the bed,you have to get a different adapter as a 203 adapter is different.I believe the crossmember for the t-case is right if the rest was bolted on.I doubt he grabbed the t-case crossmember and used it to support the adapter for the t-case since the np205 equipped k10-20 series didnt have any stock skidplate/crossmembers.One may have been added though...
205 Input Trans
10 spline male SM465 4 speed
27 spline male TH350 Auto
32 spline female, (short) TH400

Re: What did they do?

Man you guys know your stuff. The vin #( Door tag and glove box) says it's a 71 4 speed 4x4 short box. So does this mean high hump? Yes it does have both tow hooks. Whats the story on tow hooks??

Re: What did they do?

Yes,it has a high hump floor unless the vin was swapped. The hump will be bolted down on a high hump and on a low hump 2wd auto s.b.c. (small hump) the hump will be part of the floor.
The hooks...some trucks were optioned with them. So,there are originals on trucks and then there is some who add all the rare options am/fm,buckets,tilt,tach,etc and add hooks to the front of them to finish them off.My 71 had them originally but they have been robbed since
IMO,they are way overpriced and it wont be long until someone decides to make them and sell them and then everyone who has them for sale for ridiculous amounts will wish they had sold them sooner...
If you want to get rid of them, let me know I'd keep them if I were you though. Those are one year only tow hooks (72 extreme bend). The hardest ones to find and dont be suprised if you see some for sale in excess of $500.That's crazy,IMO but there is some who will pay that much for rusty old metal...

Re: What did they do?

Wow. Hooks are make up half the purchase price. Makes me feel better about the beast. In the picture, it's welded to the frame. Done from the factory, or by owner?

They were bolted on originally...

Re: What did they do?

Just thought of something..you said its a 71 according to the vin? If thats the case the hooks were added, not original but either way they are still worth alot of $$$

Re: What did they do?

I think i'll leave them welded. Did hooks come on 4x4 only. All years 67 to 72?

Re: What did they do?

Hooks were available in all 67-72 years. There was different styles though. The 67-68 style which was like the ??-66 style, the 69-72 style and then the 72 only extreme bend hooks. They could be ordered on any truck,2 or 4wd,1/2 ton or 1 ton..

Re: What did they do?

I guess I lucked out with these. I have several parts trucks, and boxes and boxes of parts. Never paid any attention to hooks!

Re: What did they do?

your bushings for the case mount are in good shape

when you remove the spacers it will bring the drive flange up a little bit

when you get the flange style cv drive shaft it will clear the cross member, it is much longer and slightly narrower than the cv shaft in the bed.

you can also slide a peice of plate between the adapter and the rubber mounts to get the falnge a little higher over the crossmember too.

Re: What did they do?

I agree.. That is a 203 transfer case.. I had one in my 79.. Yeah had one. Now I have a 700R4 and 208NP transfer case in it from an 88 GMC suburban. I think I went from 8-10MPG to around 12-15MPG on the freeway. Not documented but can notice the gas gauge not falling as much as it used too.. I cut up the rest of the burb and stuck it in the back of the truck. There was 1200 lbs back there and the tranny locked up towed it with no problem. The tranny was rebuilt with the comercial clutch pack, heavy duty torque converter, and reprograming shift kit. OH look I have a few pictures of that day..

Re: What did they do?

looks to me that the spacers are for clearance for the tran/tc from the trans tunnel. i had to space mine on my 67. converted mine from 2wd to 4wd. low hump cab no clearance. havn't had any problems with driveline angles. wheels great.

Re: What did they do?

What is the big deal on tow hooks? Any way, is it possible that the cross member is 73 up? The frames are deeper. On the hump, if the truck was original 4x4, auto or 4 speed, it has the high hump. I think only 2 wd autos had low humps. Let us know how things go.
