Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
put a floor bright/dim style switch near the existing one on the floor, make the ignition circuit pass thru the switch so that you have to have a foot on the button while you turn the key to complete the circuit. that way unless people who ride with you are really observant it will stay a secret.
then you won't have people telling the world thre gossip about how "joe has this great security trick in his truck...."

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
i have allways used a master disconnect switch, mine is located on the positive side of the battery post. there are two pieces that screw together to make the battery contact. now you do have to lift the hood . to remove this, and maybe you dont want to be seen. mine is reverse threads so it isnt likely that a thief would have such an item on them. i got it at a local marine shop . this would just be a deterant, fact is if a thief wants it bad , he or she will get it anyway they want, either it be that day or night or when ever. i had an 84 monte carlo that my brother gave me while he was in desert storm. and i had a main power switch or master disconnect( for drag cars) that my dad gave me from his drag car. i went to go visit my grandfather at the retirement center on night , like i always did. and my car got stolen, and i have never seen it again.....

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
I was kinda' thinking if I move my tank out of the cab, I'd keep the filler neck and make the cap into a switch. either a master switch, or maybe to control servos for shaved door handles

i bought a kill setup that you can even activate with a remote....gives of the sound like and alarm kills the starter but leaves clock and stuff like that alone. You have to come to Canada to Canadian Tire.

That is what I have been thinking about doing but I want a hidden button to push that has to be pushed or the HEI never gets 12 volts, push a button it gets power when cranking, no push no start. Anybody have an idea how this could be done? Jeff

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
Chipflyer, put a toggle switch in the wire you have running from your hei to your fusebox. You run the wire from your hei to under your seat, or dash (secret hiding spot) etc. hook it to the toggle switch & then run another wire out the other side of the toggle to your 12 volt power source on the fusebox. It will turn over all day long & never start until you flip the switch, You can do the same with an electric fuel pump.

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
Yes, I thought of a toggle switch but I would probably forget and leave it on one time and someone would take the truck then. I really want to figure out how to add a hidden push button that has to be pushed everytime you try to start the truck before 12 volts can get to the HEI avoiding the "oh, the one time I forget to flip the toggle and someone stole it" senario.
I think somehow adding a relay into the starting circuit that a simple push button under the dash, (or wherever) that would activate the HEI power for that startup would be pretty cool and effective. Anybody else think its a good idea or possible? Jeff

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
put a button in the wire to the starter, turn key on for ignition then press button(or foot switch, I like that one, but I still use mine for brights) for starter to run, then dont have to worry about leaving switch on or off, my dad did this on an old ferd we had but not for security reasons, somethin broke and thats how he fixed it.

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
Like Texas C10, on another car I had a switch on the distributor wire. It is not effective against a tow truck. But if there is a joyrider trying to steal your car he will only run down the battery. Mine was a toggle switch under the dash.

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
BTW -
Guys, if you really want a good setup, there are some nice alarm systems that aren't annoying out there. I have a system on mine that will kill all starter power when it is active, and will not regain power to the starter until you deactivate it. Therefore, I can leave my windows down, and as long as I lock my doors with the remote, it isn't going anywhere VIA starting. You can cut wires, bypass the system whatever. Won't happen. Plus, as soon as you manually pop those locks you are getting blasted with a siren. I have witnessed the siren a few times as I have disconnected my battery and when you hook it back up, it automatically triggers the alarm - it senses foul play, and does the same thing as if you didn't disarm the system. Sure, there probably is a way around it (especially if you know exactly what system, and exactly how to bypass), but for the common person, forget it. And even for a thief - most thieves aren't like "Memphis Raines" in Gone in 60 Seconds where their career spans 2 decades and they steal cars for a living without ever getting caught. Eventually, they will get busted. They may know how to steal them, but somewhere down the line, their time is up. Greed always gives way to getting caught. DLB |

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
I always had an idea to re-wire the cargo light to always turn on with the dome light, and use the dome light switch in the cab to be a hidden kill switch
Orange, where did you get your alarm? Last edited by texanidiot25; 08-07-2007 at 04:21 PM. |

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
I actually bought mine from Circuit City online a few years back. Don't know that is being produced any longer.
I do know from research that most of the alarms that Directed Electronics offer have the features I mentioned though. There are other brands that do too though. You could probably even find the exact one I have on eBay or something. I'd try here though - http://www.directed.com/Products/Security/Default.aspx DLB |

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
I bought a '74 Datsun P/U that was set up with a toggle switch to turn on power to the system and the horn was modified to turn over the motor. I never got the keys to the truck so I am unsure if the ignition was disconnected. The toggle switch was mounted under the driver seat.

Re: Idea for a theft deturent system
Yeh but the deal is, under the dash/under the drivers seat would be the 1st place a theif would go for if searching for a kill switch. Thats why I thought of the cargo light switch, since its OE looking, and unless you spend some time in the cab, its really not even noticable. Nor in a normal spot
