No, you don't need to drain the box to replace the PS pump.

Re: Power Steering Pump

But it does help to get out the old mixed fluid and any contaminates. Just like you want to flush out the radiator cooler lines for the transmission. I would say you could use a blow tool with low air pressure (15-20 psi). Leave the low pressure hose on the ps box and take it off the ps pump. Remove the pressure hose from the ps box. Use the high pressure side to blow air into. Have a catch can for the fluid to drain into. It will start spraying when its about empty.

This is true. I didn't do it when I changed out the pump on my truck, but I wish I had taken the time to do so.

Re: Power Steering Pump

well guys i just got through. Went to oreillys to get the new pump- turns out it IS a 74 pump (wasnt sure) but they sold me the 75-80 line, so i had to go back and get the right one. The guy there was very helpful and helped my swap out the pulley and everything. Much thanks to Cody at the Tyler Oreillys.

My old pump would squeal if i was just sitting and turning the wheel (was was this?) and now there is NO SQUEAL!!!!! and hopefully no leaks. another job well done as far as i can tell
