Re: What state has the worst rust???
The northern states with salted roads in winter sure do a number on a vehicle, but so does South Florida. Central and Northern Florida, not as much.
But we get a different kind of rust, what I call rot rust. It's from so much rain, and moisture staying on the upper surfaces. Sometimes it's really bad on a vehicle that sat under any kind of foliage. The leaves collect and really hold the moisture. But we don't get the rust in the wheel arches and rockers, etc like the north. We get rusted/ rotten cowls, rear decks, drip rails, window sills. Pretty much any flat upper surface is gonna get it! |M|

Re: What state has the worst rust???
Hey Longhorn, I used to rebuild step vans for Frito also. I did most of them from Mo. & Ks. A lot from western Iowa & eastern Neb. Great business. It's not just the salt but a combination of the salt, humidity, & cold climate. If you draw a line from Springfield, Mo. East & Topeka, Ks. North, anything East or north of that is the rust belt. I think Minnesota, Wisconsin & Michigan are the worst. If seen brake rotors rust so bad the rings squeeze together.

Re: What state has the worst rust???
there must be some way to bring our trucks out to you all. Longhorn Man has is right. A business would fail in a year. But if the purpose was not for profit, but for what's right, it might work.
Everything has a purpose. Maybe if I could combine my old ladies' love for travel and CA's weather, I could help deliver what is the norm, i.e. completely and utterly Rust free trucks, out to whoever wants them? The good news is I see these all day long just waiting for the right person to make the commitment to salvage. there is truly no limit to the amount of $1500 trucks and older vehicles that are original, clean, minor blemished but very nice vehicles just waiting for someone to want them... If you see something on ebay, craigslist, whatever.. I would be happy to make a road trip out to deliver it. No profit, just gas. And I would have fun doing it. What do you think?? |

Re: What state has the worst rust???
I grew up in MO, and the rust was pretty bad. I moved to Seattle a few years back and was surprised at the cars that I never knew existed. Old Volvo's, Datsuns, etc, that I'd never seen before. They had all rusted away back in MO.
The pictures of the Blazer and S10 earlier in the thread scared the heck out of me. |

Re: What state has the worst rust???
I know most of you won't know what I am talking about , and it don't affect the entire state but here where I live in SOUTHRUST VIRGINIA on the border of west virginia and kentucky is the worst rust spot for a vehicle on earth and it's not because of roadsalt it these FRIGGIN COAL TRUCK'S the mine's use a chemical called magnitite and the truck's haul it (DUMP IT) all over the road and when it rain's it get's mixed with the water to form a black slime and as you drive thru it get's all into every crevis of a car or truck , back in the
60's before the state even tried to control it vehicle's here would litterally just fall apart , I'm talking stepside bed fender's would rust to the point that people would take wire and try to hold them on door's would rust loose from the hinges and fall down , frame's on car's and truck's would rust and fall into two peice's , this was not a good place to be made of metal even anything alluminum would rot ! the state control's it a little bit now but let me tell if it rain's YOU BETTER PARK IT !!

Re: What state has the worst rust???
I'm not a economist, but when I look at a $1500 truck thats got a solid body & frame, needs work say six grand or so to make her a decent daily driver/nice cool old truck, versus 25-30 grand for a new truck that I need a degree on to fix and every part starts with a price tag of 200......I'll go the "fix em up" route forever. The only trouble I see is the overhead costs of distributing & shipping them.

Re: What state has the worst rust???
I have a friend that buys pick-up beds in and around the Dallas Texas area. He then loads them and delivers them to body shops in the Kasas City area. He usually already has the orders for what the shops are looking for. Most of what he gets is 90-newer stuff (Domestic & Import), but also 73-86 chevy beds are popular.
Like everyone else is sying, get hooked up with an established company that uses body parts or in the restoration business. Then tell them what you can offer.

Re: What state has the worst rust???
Being from the Pittsburgh area originally, I gotta say yes the northeast is the worse. PA always seemed to be the worse to me. Of course most of us that have or do live in those areas don't know what a UNRUSTED vehicle is.
I tend to think (least while I was growing up) you didn't see quite the disasters on the road you see in Ohio, upper NY or other Ne England areas, because PA's inspection laws were (and I assume still is) so tight. When I picked up a bed (from southern New Mexico) for my 70 a couple years ago I found and did something I never saw/did in my life before. I saw actual threads on a vehicle's bolts and I was actually able to loosen the nuts from the bolts instead of torching or cutting them off.

Re: What state has the worst rust???
I can only speak for my experiences in Potsdam, NY and central MA, but New York is bad, and anywhere in New England is very bad. This truck spent its whole life in MA

Re: What state has the worst rust???
I once heard a guy from Wisconsin tell me about how they used to wax their vehicles and just leave the wax on all winter and then remove it for the warmer seasons. He said it worked very good but was rather ugly but not as ugly as the rust year-round.

Re: What state has the worst rust???
I know a guy in Connecticut that gets cabs from CA and brings them back to the east coast. They are all purchased before he gets them. He can not get them fast enough. If you want his info, I can get if for you. I would bet he would be interested in giving you a "finders fee" for these trucks. I called him a couple weeks ago for a cab, but his price for a rust free cab was a little out of my range. You could always deliver me one!!!

Re: What state has the worst rust???
north carolina is kinda bad we had rain but dont seem like its been wet. My dad used to work for DOT department of transportation and they had to scrap and salt the roads one real bad snowstorm came in December of 1989 and the dump tricks were rusted to death.

Re: What state has the worst rust???
States do not have rust. Anything metal an not protected from the elements may develop rust...sorry could not resist.
Any place that has snow and had used or is using salt...will be tougher on vehicles...but the ice is tougher on your vehicle when you are sliding on it and crashing tinto stuff... Tim

Re: What state has the worst rust???
Wisconsin is bad rust wise..My '69 K20 is proof of that.I had to retire it due to the firewall being rusted to nothing. My K/5 is from Kentucky and has been since atleast 2 owners ago..It is pretty rusty..Indiana,well it has it's own share of rust problems.Atleast in the southern part it isn't as bad as in the northern part but still rusty..Ill. has a bad reputation for rust...I seen a '67 small window short fleet with the bed completely rusted in 2!!
There is some nice 67-72s around here though. One member around has a '69 K20 with 60,000 miles from Ill. that is about 90% rust free...The nicest original truck in Indiana I've seen is this '69 C/30 I want to buy...It has few miles on it,and has been in a heated garage for many years. That is why it has survived this long..it even has a factory 6 cylinder tach If you're from the south and think you have rust issues, come up here and see what rust really is..This is the cab corner/rockers on that nice '69 C/30.
