I have been talking to a guy name Chris at Bowtie Overdrives, and he's been very helpful. If I have to go with the 153 tooth flex plate how hard will it be to find a starter to work with it?

Hi Tim,
The starter for the 153 tooth is easy to find, the difference in starters is just in the nose cone. You were right about there being two long bolts that pull up from the bottom. Oh, by the way these are suppossed to be special bolts (they look sort of like head bolts). If the two bolts are directly across from each other (travelling towards the crank) then the starter is for the 153. If the two bolts are staggered, then the starter is for the 168. My 250 block is drilled for both (total of 3 holes), but it's a '74.

Also, as arkracing said, you need to make sure the bolts that hold the ring gear to the torque convertor line up. I think there are only two patterns, but I'm not positive. Some ring gears are drilled for both patterns. And, the ring gear needs to be for an early SB that has the two piece rear seal, and without any external balancing like a 400 would use.

Once you get the correct parts, this is actually a pretty easy bolt together.

My 65 was stock with a 3 on the tree. It had a starter with the straight bolt pattern and a 153 tooth flywheel. When I switched to a TH350 auto, I used a pre-87 flexplate with a 153 tooth ring gear. I used one from TCI and it had the correct hole pattern for the TCI Street Fighter converter I used.

I did a quick search on Autozone.com. Here is what I found that a 84 c-10 can have a I6 with a 700-R4 trans. Flexplate #FRA100HD, Starter #DL3508S, both of them are 168 tooth patterns...I also looked at a 75 model with I6 and auto, shows the same parts.

That would work ok as long as his block is drilled/tapped for both bolt patterns, as the 168t flexplate will need the offset bolts and not the straight across.

As far as getting the starter it shouldn't be a big issue. The nose's do interchange on the starter, but if you use the 168 flywheel and need the straight across patterned started head, you can't just switch them - trust me I tried

Just trying to save you from a head ache. I had to pull the motor back out and switch to the 153t flexplate when I did mine. Luckily it was only bolted in with a few bolts when I found out the starter wouldn't work.
