Re: Easy way to remove tires from wheels?

I just called the three closest tire stores to me. They all want either $10 or $15 per tire to break them down.

I'm doing it myself.

Thats how we break the bead on slicks at the track in a pinch. Have also used the hydraulic jack of the enclosed trailer.

Good luck.

I do have a couple more tricks up my sleeve for breaking beads, I'll post if you will need em.

they do make a duck billed hammer that is super dandy at breaking beads, but you probably won't want to buy on for a couple of tires.
before you bend your bumper I have one word side cuts(snips) whatever you want to call them to cut the bead and sidewalls

No kidding!! I can completely lift my truck clear of the ground (both rear tires) by my bumper. And have several times (both intentionally and unintentionally).

I've changed tires before redneck style. It's not fun. Definitely worth the trip to the tire store. Aren't there any Les Schwabs down there?

Re: Easy way to remove tires from wheels?

Ok, well, here's a status update:

I managed to jump up and down on one of them hard enough with both heels that I kicked it off the bead. So after knocking out the other bead the same way (took many more jumps), I managed to free up one tire. The other three wheels were nowhere near this easy (same tires, though?). And getting the first bead over the lip was easy, second bead is a bear. First tire was off in 5 minutes. Spent ten minutes trying to break bead on others, no dice.

As I sit here typing this, I'm thinking that squirting something like dish soap + water mixed would probably make getting the initial bead broke a hell of a lot easier. It's too late, not going out to try now. What do you guys think?

I noticed the odball wheel of the bunch has the center hole blown out a little bit. Looks like I'm headed to the junkyard either way. Maybe I can scrounge up some trim rings while I'm at it.

BTW - Mr Gasket baby moon part number 4580 (baby moon cap) seems to be the perfect fit. Just haven't found a store with any in stock. I tried to go to the local "Vato Zone", but someone robbed it about 30 minutes before I got there, so the store was shut down. Advance Auto Parts had to special order. Lame.

Re: Easy way to remove tires from wheels?

Oh yeah - and I took the wife's honda and backed over the tire, still wouldn't break it off the bead. Tried it on all three. Even sat the car on top of the tire, and jumped up and down on it to break the bead, no dice

This has been one of many experiments in futility I've tried.

If I could find a tire shop that would de-bead for $5/each, I'd do it. I'm not paying someone $30 to do the last three wheels, though. That's highway robbery.

Will do. If I sell some rims I have and have to take the tires off to cut down shipping, I'll take some with a unfooled-around-with clock in the background. Going to the pull apart soon and maybe getting another spare that has a better rim, and I will take pics if I have to cut that tire off. I would bet you $$$ and you could set the time limit(a resonable of course), but I dont know if that goes against any forum rules. If you gave me a razor and a pair of side cuts I'd have it off in under 2 min. Are you thinking of tin snips?

Never done it before, but am thinking of heading out to the garage with my cam. Not to show you up, let me put it this way. I'm sure you've seen or at least heard of that LIFE cereal commercial, "give it to Mikey he'll eat anything"
Well I'm the 26 year old kid('kid' used lightly) that will try ALMOST anything if someone says it cant be done just for the fun of it and the laughs that people get. I'll call the pull apart tomorrow and see how much their spares go for, plus I need some odds and ends, even if I get a small donut(would that be acceptible?) I could use the rim and build a stand for the bench grinder.

Re: Easy way to remove tires from wheels?

Actually, after thinking about it, if the bead is doing its job, the lube shouldn't be able to penetrate the tire, so I don't know that it would help.

Re: Easy way to remove tires from wheels?

When he breaks the beads loose on our 18 wheeler tires our tire guy squirts them with a soapy water mixture & whacks the bead area with a tire hammer that resembles a long handled sledge hammer.

Re: Easy way to remove tires from wheels?

Shifty. The junkyards usually have a tire machine. I would guess they would dismount cheaper than a tire store.

If that doesn't work, I'll get Mongo on his horse and headed your way. Just don't feed him beans.

Re: Easy way to remove tires from wheels?

the problem is the bead is stuck to the wheel. jumping on the tire isnt doing hardly anything because the sidewall is absorbing the whole impact of your body weight. they can sometimes be stubborn even with a tire hammer. i bet if you figure up the amount of time wasted and aggrevation you have had this far 30 bucks would be worth it.

Are the tires actually any good? Maybe you can offer them up to someone free, all they have to do is pay to remove them.

Once secured it does really well, especially for the price. But if you don't see your self doing it much, I'd go have someone dismount them for you.
i have one of these too, wait until they put it on sale, i got mine for around 30bucks, but you have to mount it

Re: Easy way to remove tires from wheels?

drive a screwdriver between the tire and rim, then put another next to the first, and work around the rim, opening just a small crack. squirt (or paintbrush) the soapy water in the crack. (just a couple drops dish liquid to a quart), then you can either continue working around with screwdrivers or prybars, or lay a 2X6 or 2X8, or larger, on the sidewall, end close to the bead, and drive a car up the board. slowly.usually working around the bead, little bit at the time, with the screwdrivers etc, works for me, just open a small crack then work it around and around and around, making it a little bigger each time. after a couple, three times you should have it off the rim, then you break the other side the same way if necessary, and then pry it off. make sure you push the bead down to the smallest part of the rim, as mentioned. It's not hard to break them down if you do it bit by bit, but you're never gonna duplicate the way a tire machine takes them off in one pass. Good Luck!
