Re: gas prices

Hell, i've got 2 kids, 3 and 1. I'm paying $5 a gallon for milk every day. Gas at 3.12 in Austin is only bad when you drop the size 12 and get the jump on that Neon at the stop light.

87 octane for 3.55 at discount, 3.66 for brand name... 3.92 for diesel

Hope I don't live to see the day when a Civic or Corolla is considered a luxury car...

Re: gas prices

$3.61 in Santa Maria - but the company pays my gas, and my wife only drives a couple of miles a day - my gas bill probably isn't 100 bucks a month.

$ 3.09 for regular here in Southern Idaho. $3.79 for diesel. That sucks, my service truck and our equipment uses too much of that stuff.

Not to mention a good diesel setup will sip fuel. Too bad you can't find a good GM oil burner that is within range of your yearly salary.

Re: gas prices

Around here it's $3.40something.

With oil closing at $104 a barrel today it doesn't look to bright with this stabilizing anytime soon. With summer on it's way too, $4 is not out of reach.

Looks like less driving with the truck is near

Arrow Re: gas prices

here in southrust Virginia regular is $3.21 and diesel is $3.80 ,
why do they make 3 different grade's of gas ? I have drove for 25 year's and never bought anything but regular , why would you buy the other ?

another thing that is funny about this is how that when something go's up in price it actually save's you money , I remember when cigarette's and skoal hit $2.00 per pack/can I was spending $35 to $40 buck's per week on that and once it hit the $2.00 dollar mark I quit !
now with gas I used to spend $70 dollar's a weekend for car show's and $ 50 per week for work when gas was under $2.00 per gallon ,
after gas went over $2.00 I pretty much quit going to the out of town car show's and got a job with a company truck to drive and now I rarely buy gas except for my 67 C10 for local driving , my 67 camaro has sat out here for the last 4 year's , I spend less on gas right now than I ever have in my life ,, strange ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

2.99 outside Austin. 3.09 - 3.15 in town. The commute is a killer. People wreck and then everyone has to look. My truck spends more time idling than anything else during the morning drive.

Simplified answer... If you have a higher compression engine you need the higher octane, or it will ping.

I'm sure there are LOTS of people that buy mid-grade or premium for no reason other than they can say they always fill up with premium.

I, for one, cannot afford gas to drive to work anymore, so I am going to quit. I just haven't figured out how to keep beer and food in the refrigerator yet.

Not so fast there. Take a look at this. The oil companies are making only about 7 cents profit per gallon. The refineries about 31 cents. The taxes amount to 62 cents! And lest we forget- Congress mandates fuel standards resulting in exotic gasoline cocktails that run up prices even more! On top of that Congress (again) along with our pals the environmentalists haven't allowed any exploration, drilling, or consrtuction of new refineries in this country in how many decades? So the thugs in the Middle-East and Venezuela take up the slack! Who do you think would build a more environmentally friendly drilling & refining operation, us or these stellar world citizens? Finally, the price of oil is market driven. The Chinese and the Indians are idustrializing and drving up demand, Gotta make more supply here folks! And then there's corn- Don't even get me started on the wisdom of turning a basic food grain into fuel!

You want to blame someone don't be too quick to gang up on the oil companies. Congress could cut the price of oil overnight just by rolling back taxes!

Re: gas prices

Zonaman, where did you get the information that oil companies only make 7 cents profit on each gallon? I see that Exxon/Mobile had quarterly profits (THATS PROFIT) of over $10,000,000,000.00 Yes $40b for 2007. Yes thats billions! It sure seems that with higher prices their profits keep getting bigger. There is plenty of oil, what drives up the prices/market are the F$#%@ Oil traders. They drive up the price on fear and pull out their profits. The gov't just sits back and watches since they end up collecting taxes on the traders profit anyway.

Re: gas prices

72Levi, click on the link in my post (OK- rant), scroll down to the tables for March. Even at 7 cents a gallon they're making some kale! And so are we- Anyone got mutual funds? More than likely there are some energy stocks in there. And Amen, I say Amen to your thought on the traders. But keep in mind, their fears are rooted in supply issues.

Re: gas prices

I happen to agree with what Zonaman is stating. Yes, Exxon made 40 billion in profit, but this is only a return of around 7 or 8 percent. Not exactly a stellar percent for any industry, but the number is staggering due to the size of Exxon and the rise in oil prices.
