Re: whats the average price for machine work...
From Canada here I'm looking at getting the same work done to my 454; I was given rough price of $1000-1100

Re: whats the average price for machine work...
Sounds like a good price. To get that done here would be $1,500 > $2,500 including the heads. Nothing exotic either!
esll.

Re: whats the average price for machine work...
Ok, sorry, took me a few to get a hold of him but just for labor to deck the block, acid clean and check, bore and finish cylinders, cam bearings and freeze plugs, and R&R pistons is $292 plus parts. If you want the cylinders torque honed (which he recommends for anything performance) it would be an additional $40, so $332 plus parts. Hope this helps! Let me know if you are interested in calling him, I can give you his number.

Re: whats the average price for machine work...
Im going to get a block and have it machined. then pick all the innards that i want to build my engine just how i want it. My dad has a hoist hes going to let me use, and from the last poster i know i can fit my block in my monte. So looks like about a week or two and ill have a block sent in to be worked on.couple weeks i should have it back and ill put it together. Mabee have the truck running in a month? As far as the sleep thing, im only 21 so i dont need much sleep, i work on the truck in the mornings, then work 3 to 11 at my job then come home and spend time with the ms. then after 1 or so i research the truck, and familiarize myself with the next step in my rebuild. All in all i think i get 5 hours of sleep a day.

You weren't able to salvage the motor out of the old truck? I was just curious about what you were doing because the last time we chatted, you had "issues" with the truck being in storage. Being able to "spec" an engine to your needs, is a good thing. I bought my '69 off my son when he took a job transfer out of state. But, when bought it, it had a 292, granny 4 speed in it. When that motor went away, I just happened to have a 4 bolt 350 sitting in the garage. So we decided to build it for his truck. (He was still in H.S.) At that time, the truck had a slide in camper & he regularly pulled my boat & trailer. When we were discussing things with the guy @ the machine shop about cams, compression ratios, etc., it was made clear that a ton of low end torque was needed. He gave us (actually sold us) what was needed. It starts building torque just off idle, & it's a monster pulling away from a stop. So I'd definitely say build what's going to work for you. BTW, I'm nearly 3 times as old as you & I wish I could sleep for 5 hrs. in a row. It's great to see you young guys interested in this old stuff.

oil pan ripped off, distributor bent about a 45 degree angle, carb is shattered, aluminum intake is cracked, both manifolds are ripped in half, one is sheared off the engine, half of the bell housing is still attached to the truck while the other half including the transmission was no where to be found(wrecker said it 'blew up" and they had to rake up the shrapnel off the road), one valve cover was sheared off and water pump was cracked in half. I think thats it, my point being, i would have needed a plasma cutter just to remove the engine, then once i got in there chances of the internals being any good are slim to none. They way i figure, you got a crank spinning 2k rpm and then you throw a 2 ton sledge hammer at the front of the engine , your gonna push the crank further into the engine, probably breaking the crank and all the caps. |

Re: whats the average price for machine work...
yea, dont think many people really grasped the fact that there was literally nothing i could salvage off that truck. (by the way this thread has really turned into general chit chat, i hope liz isn't watching)

Re: whats the average price for machine work...
Enough of this.
I get upset every time I look @ those pics, & my son said looking @ stuff live & in person is even worse. As soon as I finish paying off the tax man, I'm going to get me one o' them fancy, dancy digital cams so I can get some pictures of my trucks on here. I don't have anything fancy, just your average, workaday, haul crap to the dump, kind of trucks. And, I'm thinking I may go take a nap. I kind of want to get my Plymouth (YIKES!!!!!!!! PLYMOUTH ON A CHEVY TRUCK SITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) running tomorrow. The gas mileage on it is about 50% better than either of my trucks. Oh, BTW, are you doing your own engine build, or having it done?

Re: whats the average price for machine work...
As I've said on here before, "I love building motors"
When I'm doing an engine; I forget about the crap at work, I forget about bills, etc. My total concentration is getting it put together the right way. I forget about all my other problems when I got that block on the engine stand. The only engine failure I've ever had was, once, when I ran short of money, I reused a set of rods, without having them checked. One of them failed! Since you are this deep into it, don't scrimp. Just my .02.
