Re: Angry rant
A lot of my son's friends come over and several of them like to hang around the shop and talk, watch and BS with me. A couple of the guys(kids) really ask questions and are interested in learning a little bit about mechanic work.
I try not to tease or be little them for their inexperience but sometimes it's just good, clean fun. I do get a little testy sometimes and I'll tell you why. I work 60-70 hours a week and then come home and try to make a little cash fixing lawn mowers and small engines. I've only got a little bit of time and sometimes it's like. "go away, kid you're bothering me." No harm meant I'm just tired and cranky. edit: There's one kid that I tease mercilessly, but it's cause I really like him, not being mean.

Re: Angry rant
In general, because none of us can speak to your specific situation....
"Approach/attitude" has a lot to do with this kind of relationship. A "young guy" that acts like a know-it-all, will not be received well. (Even if he does) The "best case scenario" for a young guy, is to know what he it talking about, but not be "the best guy in the room". Knowledgeable and confident but not cocky is the key. The "old guys" have already been there....and they are not necessarily willing to just give it away, you have to earn it as much as they did. Experience is a far better teacher than you think it is.... Doing things successfully/smoothly is great, you learn more from the things that don't go so well. The truly good older guys, that don't have an axe to grind for some other reason, will eventually share/help, but a lot has to do with you. You have to be willing to "learn" something that you already know from the older guys....Just take it, once in a while, and the stuff that you really can learn from them will happen. Most of the older guys are not going to waste the time on some kid that won't be around long....staying power gets respect too. "Someday" you will be one of them....and for the very same reasons, you will act the same way To be fair, things really do go both ways though. Older guys that don't think that they can learn from the young ones are not the "wise" older guys, especially when it comes to newer vehicles. Not everything from the older guys is "gospel" either....just because "they have done it that way for years" doesn't make it right. This is where experience comes in, older guys can get stuck in their ways, it is up to you to figure out which is better for you. "Learn from the mistakes of others.....you will never live long enough to make them all yourself." Above all, don't take it personally.....unless it is. If it is personal, the "professional" interaction is meaningless. Some people will never get along and if you face that, and not worry about it, or try to "fix" it...you will be better in the long run. |

Re: Angry rant
^ I agree! We have an "older guy" at work that does the late shift. He is VERY knowledgable in older vehicles and diesels. He asks me alot of questions on the newer stuff because he hasn't had the training and I ask him alot of questions on the older stuff because he knows alot of tricks and I wasn't around. And I will be the first to say I don't know everything. I've been wrenching for 15 years and with as much as they change and upgrade from one model year to the next, it takes ALOT of training to keep up. Granted there are kids that have been raised around cars and have alot of knowledge, just don't flaunt it or be pushy with it. That is what gets us more experienced guys irritated and will ruin a relationship real quick! PATIENCE is very important!

Re: Angry rant
That's good advise. A lot of us would do good to take it to heart and get it in our head.

Re: Angry rant
Us old guys were young once. I had an attitude when I was younger. I have an attitude now that I'm older. It's just a different attitude.
I wouldn't listen back then, and now I can't hear....

The lack of responses by slammedd 70 indicate to me that he just came here to stir the pot. If he wanted a solution, he would have given more info.

Re: Angry rant
i agree with Fred T....and i dont what kind of people...Slammed70 hangs out with....but to me its like a pissing contest....i am one of the youngest people in my shop....out of 12 guys.....Not once have i ever been treated as a dumb ass because i did not know. how to do something .nor when i asked a question....of course i KNOW i dont know it all .. and i have no CHIP on my shoulder nor anything to Proove....i know what i know and try and learn along the way....Out of the work place i have about 3 friends that are my age....and all others are at least 20 years older than me...Never once have the ever acted like they also know everything...i think its the class of people one is around .and the attitude taken when showed things ....or when advice is given.......being better than someone else does not matter .nor does knowing more..the Goal at hand should be the prize....just my 0.2

Re: Angry rant
Should be able to. They say ignorance is bliss, but in my opinion ignorance is just the lack of trying.
