A lot of nice big trucks!

The closest I'll get to one of those is the 66' C-60 I bought a couple of months back. I was thinking about going the turbo diesel route with some stacks.

i love these big trucks too, where i work there is a big old red diamond-T prime mover that tows a scrap metal trailer around goes past 5 times a day, every day - man its loud, you can hear it screamin from a mile away... ill try to get some pics next time i see it.

I've only ever heard of a V-12 the biggest I know of that Detroit ever put in a truck. There may have been a 16, but if so, I never heard of it. The 12v71's heads, pistons, rods, etc were all interchangable with the inline 6, the well known 6-71.

The 16 cylinder Detroits (16V-71) were never factory installed in any highway trucks (but that didn't stop some with more money than sense from installing 16's themselves!). The 12 cylinders (12V-71) were available in a number of rigs in the 70's, including the cabover GMC Astro 95's and Chevy Titan 90's. About the biggest engine you could get in a '66-'76 GMC 'Long Nose' from the factory was the 8 cylinder 8V-71.

Tim, I've had an idea for a long time about building me a big rig hot rod, and I know a cheap way to do it. I mentioned this in another thread, so sorry if you've already heard it.
My dream project has a 40ish truck cab with nice patina sitting on a school bus frame. You can pick up good running school buses for $1,000 or sometimes less at county auction around here. Most have Cat diesels with Allison automatics, and Budd wheels. Strip the body off (I know, big job), then sit your 1940 truck body on. Most school buses I've seen have 3 driveshafts, so unbolt the rear suspension, slide it forward to where you only have one driveshaft and cut the excess frame, then slap on some nice polished Alcoa wheels and 8" stacks. Oh yea, now you're talking.
Only flaw to this project, I think, is the frame width. I've never taken measurments, but I wonder how much difference there is in width. It may just be a pipe-dream that's not possible. Maybe that's why I've never seen it done.

Maybe a bit off topic, and shoot me down at will, but, getting back to the smaller trucks, think about the original Power Wagons from about 46 to 68. Flathead sixes, not fun to drive, something like 5.36 gears, Dodge, not Chevy... Uh-Oh.

It belongs on a whole different forum but they are historic trucks...

Yes, and there wasn't a driveline that could hold up to them at the time either!
