Re: Project... Tinker !!!

Yeah, do tell on the slot.
I don't understand the thinking because any sharp edges in the combustion chamber or quench area causes detonation. Those are #624 76cc smog heads, so lowering the compression shouldn't be the issue either?

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

I was also wondering on the slots. I had a pair of those 624 heads on my truck with whopping 1.72/1.50 valves...it actually ran OK but when I put a pair of closed-chamber 2.02 heads on it it gave it a LOT more power. I don't think I'd run a pair on a 283 though because it would have really low compression.

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

The heads were 58cc combustion chamber & they have 184 intake / 150 exhaust valves

After the mods I did to them they are now 60cc which is what the heads on my 283 were & they had 172 intake / 150 exhaust

What I did was, curve the casting so that it wasnt sharp ( as one of yall said, sharp edges make hot spots) it also makes less turbulence for the flame travel
The groove also aids in flame travel & I rounded it too, so its not a hot spot either

From what I have read, by doing the mods I did it should help me be able to run more compression on 87 octane crap gas

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

It could be a few things...
The cam wasn't broken in properly (lubed & ran)
The valves weren't adjusted properly (to tight)
or you got a bad cam, it could be a cheap cam too.

Your right, it's hard to tell! The only sure thing is your getting a new one, with the head work you can put a nice thumper in it.
That truck is badass, if you ever want to sell it, let me know!!

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

I have a comp cam that came out of wild mouse that has way more round lobes than yours !! I called them and they told me I must have installed wrong or improper break in !! Bulls@#t I will not use a comp cam again . Have too many friends that have had trouble with them getting flat lobes on em . I am sure someone will chime in and tell me they think they are great and it was my fault . I've been building motors for 20 yrs this was my first and last comp cam!!!! My 2 cents ! I think the cam you told me about will be great in your motor !! Later, Bob

I've been building engines with Comps for years with no problems, but that doesn't mean they didn't ship one out without it being case hardened. It happened to GM in late 60's, and it could have happened at Comp. Either way that sucks, and I hate to hear about that.

I'm not saying they make junk . I had a bad experience and I don't forgive real easy . I will choose not to run them in the future . I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else and i got all the bad luck !! Bob

I totally understand. If my first product from a manufacturer was bad, I sure wouldn't be in a hurry to buy from them again ESPECIALLY since customer service didn't help you out any.

Yup They acted like since I didn't have a shop with my name on it or I wasn't what they call a "professional" I must be a automatic retard !!! So I felt that people like that don't need my money!!! Bob

Bob, Im there with you

Its the only comp Ive ever ran & it sure doesnt make me want another one... Im not saying my brother couldnt have done something wrong, but I highly doubt it
I mean, hes about as picky / pefectionist as I am on engines & I dont think he would have just been a "Auto Retard"

I called Lunati & had a great experience with them... I called TALKED TO A PERSON, then that person tranfered me to ANOTHER PERSON !!!!
Great deal
I did call back later & the time between the first person & the second person was a lot longer than the INSTANT transfer I got the first time, but it sure beats the heck out of a lot of other companies that you have to have a user manual to get through the Auto system

BTW Bob, I showed you 2 cams... the 00017 & the 00010
Which one did you like better ???

Im thinking the 00010 even tho its prolly a lil big for my engine, it should be sweet

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

Everyone makes mistakes, even comp and especially folks that don't build motors for a living, even those that do make mistakes.

I'm sure what the comp guy was implying is that your not a "professional" builder, have a machine shop or install cams on a daily basis, it either came out wrong or was misinterprited. They would be around as long as they have if they built junk. (IMO)

I agree with that for the most part, but I also think it could be possible that they do occasionally send out some less than quality products

Absolutly, with what they produce per month, that is bound to happen.
