Re: fleetside bed pics for 72BlckButy,...

you will have to unbolt the wheel wells as well... The front panel has a few large phillips screws holding it. I had to grind mine off... I had a wood bed so it might be a little different. I also had spot welds on the rear sill holding the bedsides, gives them stability when the tailgate is down...

Nice looking bed

Re: fleetside bed pics for 72BlckButy,...

Thanks Mike! I'll keep that in mind about the front panels screws. Hopefully the bolts won't be rusted to bad, here's to wishful thinking.... I just got done with my other projects, so now I need to get crackin' on the bed.

Nice looking bed
Thanks for the info Mike! I have a question on the phillips screws that you had to grind off... I removed all but one, and the phillips part is about to strip out. Did you grind the bolt head in two, and then drill out the rest of the bolt, and retap the threads? I hate to do that, so I'm thinking about pulling what's left of the bed down to the neighbors to have them weld a nut on the phillips side of the screw so I can screw the bolt out.

Thanks for the info, and I know I walked away with this one. One thing I'm really amazed with are the rock guards, they are completely rust free! As far as updates, or course I forgot to take my camera, so I used my in-laws and will hopefully have some pics later this week. I actually began tearing the bed apart Saturday afternoon after we finished running 3/4 of a mile worth of new fence on the farm, on some of the rockiest/sloped terrain. Saturday night ended with having both fenders removed, and the majority of the bed bolts loose and ready to be removed on Sunday. As far as today, I was able to remove the rest of the floor bolts along with the tailgate, and driverside bedside. The last time the bed was assembled, they definitly didn't forget to weld the bedsides to the rear floor. If it wouldn't have been for the one phillips bolt on the passenger side, the bed would be apart. Hopefully this week I'll be able to get that pesky screw out and finish tearing the bed apart.

Re: fleetside bed pics for 72BlckButy,...

Nate,

Sounds like you are getting this thing apart.....I love to dismantle things!!!....I know you said you'd take some pics, but I had to do this anyway....

Get those pics up when you can, I'm interested in seeing how everything looks!!!

By the way...I vote for epoxy...I think primer will last for awhile, but epoxy will last longer in my mind (especially since you said it will sit for a while!!)...just my 0.02....

Re: fleetside bed pics for 72BlckButy,...

Okay guys... I know a few people (gcburdic), no names mentioned, have been wanting to see some pics, so I have a few teaser pics for you. When I started tearing the bed apart this weekend, I had left my camera at home, so I borrowed the in-laws, and I will post their pics in the next week. Here are a few pics I captured last night after I pulled the last few pieces off the floor.

Re: fleetside bed pics for 72BlckButy,...

Like I said not the best pics, but hey they're pics!

The next two show where I had to use the grinder to cut the welds layed out by the POx2. I'm guessing the majority of this area will be covered by the rear stake pockets, but I'd like to get this repaired.

Re: fleetside bed pics for 72BlckButy,...

Today at lunch I ran the pieces out to our storage shed for a month or so, that way I'll be able to save up a little more $$$. I'm considering paying the body shop to do the body work while they have the pieces there to blast. Now I need to go pick up the doors I have on hold with kingsolver, so I can add that to the quote...

Thanks for all your info on tearing the bed apart, but know those won't be the last questions I have.

Looks good Nate. Hopefully those "million" layers of paint preserved that thing. Keep up the good work!

Re: fleetside bed pics for 72BlckButy,...

I know you do... I do have a frame, that as far as I know is in pretty good shape. As far as my cab, it needs a little TLC, but should be able to be brought back together fairly easy. Keith your cab is sweet, don't tempt me!
