Ummm..no. You could be either TDC compression #1, or TDC compression #6.

To ensure you're on the right cam rotation with the dots lined up, the crank key should point to about 2:00, and the cam pin should be at about 3:00.

Re: guys i pulling my hair out i need help

it really sounds like a carb issue to me. i'd try a new carb and make sure it has a good fuel filter and its getting good clean gas.

Re: guys i pulling my hair out i need help

Since you've done everything but replace the carb again. Take it back and tell them it's bad. If you still have a warranty that is.

Years ago, I bought one from Auto Zone and had to return it. Wouldn't be surprised if that's been your problem all along.

Backfiring is caused by unburned fuel. As raw fuel builds up it can be ignited by engine exhaust heat. A miss or popping in the exhaust is not as drastic but is also unburned fuel igniting but in lesser amounts.

Either the carb (running rich), plugs or wiring can be a problem. Bad exhaust valves not seating properly can cause it by letting raw fuel seep out on the compression stroke. Anything that may prevent a complete combustion is suspect.

A good way to check for crossfirng if you supect an ignition problem is to spray a fine mist on the wires at night. If there is any problem, you'll see the arcing.

I had one bad plug on my 250 that caused a slight sputtering miss. I wound up replacing all of them. Been running smooth since.

Re: guys i pulling my hair out i need help

What are the chances you've got a valve or two a bit too tight? Once it starts warming up the valve may not be seating. It can kill the power too.

Re: guys i pulling my hair out i need help

make sure theres no rust or other stuff getting in the carb and getting in between the needle and seat and holding the needle open, which would create a severe rich condition. do you smell gas when your trying to start it?

This won't help your original problem but it may save a lot of future problems.
Plastic, or glass filters may look nice. But when paired with hot parts, they are nothing short of a recipe for disaster.

Just my .02.

I'd rather have you, or anybody else, call me on that; instead of somebody losing a truck.

YAh, that would put him 180 off of tdc if he dropped the distributor in, thinking he was on tdc #1 when he was on tdc #6

Re: guys i pulling my hair out i need help

This tells you the cam is probably not 180 out...but it doesn't locate TDC for timing accuracy or tell you that the cam isn't a tooth or two out.

IMHO, this is a timing issue - and in any case, always ensure the timing is right before moving on to the carb. My suggestion remains verifying TDC and working from there, but I'm being a broken record so I'll drop

Re: guys i pulling my hair out i need help

If the distributer is still in it, than were is the rotor pointing? Just because your on TDC with the piston up doesn't mean that your on compression stroke, you may be on exhaust stroke. Now with your balancer marks at zero and the #1 piston up, it should be on tdc, but if the timing gear wasn't installed correctly, than it wouldn't be correct.

Re: guys i pulling my hair out i need help

Looks like problem is fixed then??... Is it running smooth now?

Those multiple bugs can sure mess you up. The problem is you chase one and the others still give you problems. I worked in the computer industry for over 30 years and some of my worse problems were when there 2 or more bugs involved...
