I like that Pontiac, looks tough and quick I really don't keep too much record on what I put in my projects, it would be depressing Actually, other that the purchase price of my truck back about 6 years ago ($1300) the most expensive step on it was the suspension from ECE. Even that was under 1K so I think I am OK on total costs, but it's still a pretty basic truck overall nothing fancy about it. I barter, trade, search craigslist ect so that keeps the costs way down. The Chevelle, well after 21 years of ownership you kind of get lost in the 'keeping records' thing

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
I have been stashing receipts in a drawer for both trucks. Dont know what receipt belongs to what truck. On the 69 fleet...I am hoping to not go over 15,000.00

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
I've got 2 to keep track of my spending on. Number of parts I have increases, whereas the amount of money I have decreases, and yet I'm still no closer to being done, lol.

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
I am working on a spreadsheet for mine as well. I am going to have three columns. One for the price i paid for the parts, one for the retail value of the part, and one for the installation cost of the part. I will be doing most of the work myself with someone helping me with the body work and paint, but will be counting the hours and putting his shop rate ($60/hr) on them. Then if i ever go to sell the truck, i will be able to show the potential buyers what it would cost them to duplicate the truck. I've just started and with estimating hours and the retail cost of the parts i plan on, the build is looking like it would cost someone $30-35K (still have some costs up in the air as i make final decisions on suspension/wheels, etc.). I am going to have MUCH LESS than that because it's all my labor and i too scrounge craigslist and ebay for deals and try to trade/sell parts to fund the project. But i think it will be helpful when i go to sell the truck and for insurance purposes once it's built.

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
I started to keep track then stopped/lost interest in knowing, it was about spending some quality time with my youngest son before he graduated high school and went off to secondary education!! Now that its done I can guesstimate what I have in it and I think I could get very close to that if I sold it, but now is the fun part...he and I both get to enjoy it and get the thumbs up from alot of people we meet!! Pretty hard to put a price tag on that.

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
my happy place is found in the cost average.
6 vehicles, added up purchase prices, divided by 6 = 1,641$ a piece. I am a fairly cheap date by todays standards life is good, kent |

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
I am with backyard88 in that I keep all rec. for all purchases, but don't add them up until I am finished, if I did it before I would not have a project it would be sold

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
I have been keeping all my records and i know i will never get the money out that i have invested but the reward of owning our style trucks , and the look on peoples faces when they see a 67-72 chevy that brings back childhood memories or was the first style auto they owned when they started driving.. So why spend money on these trucks like we do,.. well guys its called passion for something you love..

When building my 496 there wasn't enough ink in the pen the write down the expense and certainly would not want the wife to know!

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
I put all my receipts in a box and added them up, what i put into isn't any where close to what I can get for it, I got about 25k into it, don't ask me, I started whn I was 15, and still change things on it, I'd post a pic, but I've seen alot nicer trucks the cost alot less to look like they do, let's just say that my truck is in the family for good, hopefully my 7 month old daughter will want to have it when she turns 16, I mean drive it, we'll see, I still need to get rims for it, and now the bed is getting redone too,I'll post some pics

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
i have just kept a mental list of costs in my head. the purchase of the truck was $2500 and i've stuck about $4k into it while bagging it, doing the needed body work and paint.
I don't keep track of the time i've put into it, but i would put it in the 175-225 hour range. Although I'd love to keep every project I ever do, i'm realistic in the fact that what i've built in this truck will be what finances the next project. I have posted it on CL with a price that would nearly triple my investment. If someone sees that value in it, great. Until then, i'm perfectly happy driving it nearly ever day. |

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
OK, I dug mine out of the attic of the computer and actually updated it. By the way I found that ebay's history only goes back so far. So, I went to paypal and they have everything that I've bought and paid for through them.
So far it looks like I've spent ~$1722.09 and I...don't run which is good because I have no brakes, no lights, and the tires/rims are shot...oh not to mention its not licensed (the engine ran when I bought it though so it should be good after it gets wired up and I have the lights just not hooked up, and I'm working on the licensing thing). I've got a Question...How did you post your spreadsheet on here?

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
Yea, I started a .xls AFTER my truck was built so I could keep track of all the "adders" I did.
When it started getting close to $10k, I quit. It's discouraging to see what you really have in it when you only want half that in it. DLB |

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
Nope, my ADD and impulsiveness make it impossible for me to concentrate long enough! Honestly I do not care how much. I took a 99 Vortec 350 into the machine shop for a buget 383 build (went into thinking I could get out fo the there for $1500, but then came the well if this is OK then this is better and I'd want it later, so I should just buy it now and save money by not having to get it later!?)and spent $2600 on a pretty radical 383. What can I say, a plan doesn't work, I am 36 and just found out (actually was told) I was ADD and Dr confirms, that explains why I have been/done things like I did for so long. I am not rich, and rarely throw money away on stupid stuff, but if I want something I buy it. Summit regularly gets $1000-2500 orders from me and if I added up all the money I have spent on the Camaro, trucks, blazers, etc I'd probably die, but lucky for me, out of sight, out of mind! No one understands what it costs to build one of these or any vehical for that matter, until they have done it, then they buy other guy's money pits to save the hassle!
For a new vehicle spin on this, just look at what a "new" car costs!! my 07 dodge is abot $600 a month, plus diesel fuel, ins, tires, intake, exhaust, etc, etc. My older stuff is way cheaper, but most folks would argue they are saving money on a new vehicle vs the money we throw away on our "old" trucks!! I keep a folder in my cabinet with all the receipts but will probaly not do a total until the truck has been finished.

Re: Who all tracks their spending and plans on their projects?
I agree. I have receipts for most stuff, but if my wife were to know how much has been spent and how much more needs to be spent....lets just say not a good thing.
