I saw those wheel spacers, so you gonna keep the Impala wheels for now?

It should make about 525. It will be a 406 with Brodix track 1 heads with some port work and a stout hydraulic roller cam. I really want to do a twin turbo combo for it eventually, but really this should be fine.

Yep. The $$$'s have been flowing out pretty good lately for parts and wheels are so easy to change later. I don't want to skimp on something else for now when I can swap wheels later. They have grown on me anyway. I think the 30" tall tires are the main problem. I put the spacers on this weekend before I tore the bed off so I could see how they worked and it really made a huge difference. It looked fine to me after putting them on.

Chassis Work

I got it torn down the rest of the way. I removed the leaf springs that the PO had installed and got it ready to put trailing arms back in. I beefed up the trailing arms a bit with some welds. Then I had a guy come out and blast the frame, the inside of the bed, the cab floor, the inside of the firewall and under the dash. He also did the trailing arms, the trailing arm crossmember, the hood hinges, e-brake assembly, the pedal assembly, etc. The blasting was yesterday. Then today, I painted the frame and the subframe. I actually still have to c-notch the frame, but I plan on putting a 2nd coat of paint on anyway. I'm going to do the notch and replace the buggered up front tip and then paint it again. I'm very pleased with the result so far. I wouldn't have thought I could have gotten that far in a weekend with the frame. Here's several posts worth of pics

Re: My 71 Build to be named later

I used a satin paint, the gloss hadn't evened out when I took the pics, but it appears to be drying nicely so far. The original trailing arm crossmember had been hacked on a bit so I'm swapping it. I'm taking the cleaned up replacement by to borrow my friends plasma cutter so I can cut the holes for the exhaust. Then I can weld in the tubing and paint it and put it back in. Do you guys think it would look good or bad if I painted the trailing arms in a glossy paint to contrast the satin frame or should I paint them the same color. I was thinking about doing some of the smaller bolt on pieces in a gloss finish such as the motor mounts and trailing arms. What do you think?

Re: My 71 Build to be named later

Nice. What type of media did he use to blast the parts? - I see him wearing a Fresh Air Mask - so I'm assuming some type of silica based media.
What did it cost to do all those pieces?

Re: My 71 Build to be named later

He used a product called Star Blast. I don't know what it is really. It was $400 to do everything they blasted. The bed had some cheapy liner product in it that was time consuming to remove. The frame was only 2 hours because I had pressure washed it and gotten the grease off first. The inside of the bed took 1.3 hours because of the liner.

Re: My 71 Build to be named later

That's how you do it right there. Get the sandblaster to come to you! I am still cleaning up my frame with a wire wheel. Would have been more than happy to pay $400 to get it cleaned up.

Looking good.

Looks good Tom,
If those are the same trailing arms from me, they came out great. I would like more info about who to call for blasting my frame and misc. parts. I would like to get my frame painted as well. Again, your project moving along nice.

They are the same ones that I got from you. The name of the company that did the blasting was called DGS Powdercoating. I can get you the number, but don't have it with me right now. And, thank you for the compliment.

Man, your project is moving along nicely! Question; why do you prefer air mass sensor over speed density algorithm? I'm building a Megasquirt MPI stand-alone system and would like to hear your insight. I'm using innovates wide band O2 sensor also.
Keep the pics comin'!

Re: My 71 Build to be named later

Sorry I fell off the face of the earth with my project for a while. We've had a few bad things happen around here that have had us pretty out of sorts for a while. My wife is having surgery for breast cancer tomorrow. She's had chemo for a while prior to the surgery to reduce the size of the tumor. Things are getting somewhat back to normal and I'm planning on getting fired back up on my project VERY shortly.

I posted up a question in the suspension area about tubular control arms and could use some suggestions if anybody has any insight.

Thanks,

Tom

Re: My 71 Build to be named later

Time to resurrect an old thread. The wife survived fine but we divorced after it was over. So after all the bad stuff was over and I got a new boat and got some fishing done, I finally decided it was time to finish the truck. Unreal that it's been 3 years and it just sat there. I worked on it the last couple of weekends. C notched the frame, finished up a few odds and ends on it and shot the final paint on the frame. Finally ready to bolt some parts on it. I will update with some pics this week for sure. But I'm ready to have an old truck again.

Re: My 71 Build to be named later

Wow looking at the first pics in the thread. I can't wait to do away with those goofy door handles and tailgate handle. The prior owner had changed that stuff and wow I do not like that part. What do you guys think for a fix. Shaved door handles or stockers. Bear in mind that the truck has a shaved drip rail and back seam of the cab. I had bought the parts to do shaved door handles but am not sure what I want to do at this point.
