Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
I knew my truck was going to be driven alot so I hot power washed and degreased the frame and then sanded. I sprayed black epoxy followed by flat urethane single stage paint. Looks good and should hold up perfect.

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
I have just today finished painting mine. The chassis had been undersealed so I used a variety of discs and then a needle scaler to clean it back. I then gave it a quick blast over with a $15 sand blaster to remove most of what was left. Then one coat of a two pack rust encapsulator. Then one coat of a two pack epoxy prime, then two coats of a vinyl acyrlic on top. Was meant be be more cost effective than POR15 etc. Pics here- http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...57#post2924457

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
I have had exellent results with plain old rustoleum rusty metal primer and paint. I wire wheeled a frame for my 61 Apache in 1984 and primed and painted it with a brush, since then I but the body on a 4x4 chassis and the old frame has been sitting on the ground in the woods for about 15 years and yup it still has that black rustoleum paint on it not rusted. Also did a frame off restoration on my 69 Camaro in about 1986 ,sand blasted rusty metal primed and painted with a spray gun and still hanging on there to this day 22 years and over 100,000 miles latter. Oh and the best part ,it's cheap to buy!

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
I spray bombed my frame. It's a daily driver so no frame off here, but it definitely looks better now. Drives me nuts when a truck looks good topside but the frame and rear end are all rusty. Rattle canning it is the least you can do.

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
I agree. On my ghetto truck, that's what I did to the body, but still have to do the rusty undercarriage.

I just painted mine black because I like to drive it through thunderstorms and mud puddles, maybe do a little off roading at national truck shows.

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
Mine is rubberized undercoating. Isn't smooth or shiny - but it's protected good.
If I had it to do over - I would galvanize it, then powdercoat/paint it. That way I'd have 360° protection. DLB |

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
I powdercoated mine... Mostly because I have a "friend" that owns a powdercoating shop. I had the frame, and a whole bunch of other parts done for $500 bucks so the frame, by itself, would probably have been $300. As long as the parts are prepped properly, most finishes should last a "lifetime". The powder on my frame was laid on thick and, there were times during assembly that I had to "beat" on it with a hammer and the finish stood up during this abuse.

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
I've kinda lost some faith in por-15. I painted my Model A frame with the flat black. The finish looked terrible. It's supposedly "rust proof" and all that. The top rails started rusting and the finish didn't look good at all. I came back and shot it with semi-gloss rustoleum and it looks sooo much better. I don't think I'll be spending money on POR again.

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
Thanks Nate. I am really happy with the satin powdercoat I had applied. I have had the truck on the road for over a year now and the finish still looks brand new. A little soap and water and it shines as good as it did the day I took those pictures.

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
You can get Rustoleum either in spray can or qts & gals...Valspar(TSC),Derusto,etc.
Does that por-15 have to go on bare metal using their rust encapulator and all?Or,can it go on over other paint?

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
I don't think you can put it over other paint. I usually just sandblast the part to bare metal and then shoot it with the POR15. I've had zero problems doing it like that (so far any way, ).

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
POR 15 is made for bare metal. If you follow the instructions (which are easy) you will not have a problem with it. A 7 dollar small can is MORE than enough to coat an ENTIRE chassis if you thin it 20% and spray it on. With crummy Krylon costing about the same, this is a no-brainer.

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
Do you have any close up shots of your frame with the satin powder coat? I just went through your build thread and man your truck is nice. You did a great job on the build up!

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
I wire wheel, grinding pads and wire-brushed my frame. Afterwards Eastwoods ceramic chassis primer and paint. Very happy with the results. I have chip it once and a little bit of sanding and respray with spray can and it looked as good as new. I did use HVLP gun for the initial priming and painting.

Re: Frame Finishes: What are you using and why?
Went with POR15 myself. So far I only have two coats on the back half of my 65 frame, control arms and axle, but I plan on laying down 2 more coats of Chasis black on top for the UV protection plus I hope it dulls down the shinny look of the base coat.
I took the very paint brush when it was dry and smacked it against a 2x4 piece of pine and it made some HUGE dents in the paint and didn't even bend the brush. I then tried to bend the brush and snapped the handle. I don't know whats in the can, but man its rock hard and I hope it does what its supposed to do. Feel free to browse my build thread in my signature if you want to see photos. Just remember the overall finish of the frame is only as good as your prep work. I ground down to bear metal in most spots and others I put less effort into it because well I did. The entire frame did receive some wire wheel action, degreased using POR15 Marine cleaner, rinsed and wiped down with white rag, sprayed with etching and then rinsed again with clean water and a white rag. Each time I rinsed with the white rag I made sure it was clean as I possibly could because I wanted the surface as clean as possible for the paint to stick to. So in the future "if" my POR15 fails I know its not because of my efforts its because of the product. However if it doesn't fail I'll take all the credit for the work I put into it. |

Wow... that looks sweet! I never knew that powder would look that good. I only wish you were closer so I could get a better look at your truck.
