Re: Lowering questions...
yup it's wider...I don't know about the stepsides..... but you need to trim out the lip on the bed if your going to run up to a 8 1/2 wide wheel.anything wider you have to figure out back spacing your choise of wheels...

Re: Lowering questions...
Stepsides don't have as much room as fleetsides so it will only be worse for them...

Re: Lowering questions...
I love to hear that we are keeping the money here in P-Town. I switched over to discs at the same time too. I just went and bought some stock spindles from the local u-pull-it. And then finished with the LCA's. I was super broke, (like I am now.) It was all nice, new and painted and clean when I finished it and I was only into it a few hundred buck. Keep me posted Oregon, I want to see pics.

Re: Lowering questions...
I'm digging the LCA arm idea more and more. I've got some stock spindles around here from an '83, so the disc conversion would still be a go, and I'll save a little coin in the process...
I'm not looking to get way down in the weeds either. Just reasonably dropped. I like the ride height on Bird's truck, and LOVE Sir's truck--great looking color and wheel combo! I'll post up some pics when I get going. Got a few weeks of this term to deal with, and then I'm hoping to get cracking. |

Re: Lowering questions...
Oregoon,... ECE also sells 5-lug convesion axles for your existing rearend. That way you don't have to swap for the wider 71-72 version.

Re: Lowering questions...
Cool! I'm less inclined to go to a wider rear end. However, my stocker is 411 with a posi, which is nice off the line, but not freeway friendly.
I'm thinking of going to 307s, but given the fact I have a series 4 case, I'll need to change a lot of parts out to get below 373. Might be easier (and cheaper) to just find a bolt-in replacement with higher gears, or at least a series three case, which would allow me to drop down to something far more streetable. I've got a 292 with an SM420 behind it, so I'll just wind up using my granny around town. Hoping to tow a single-axle travel trailer eventually though, so perhaps something closer to 353 might be a smarter. There's something to be said for a bolt-in five-lug with an open diff, and the gear set I want. I think stock 72 chevs came in such a configuration? |

Re: Lowering questions...
If you weren't so incredibly far away I'd just trade you my 3.08:1 posi rear. I'd like to find a 3.55-4.11 rear for mine...

Re: Lowering questions...
I'd gladly swap you anyway, though I guess the question is what does shipping cost?

Throw in a 700r4 and keep the 4:11's!

Re: Lowering questions...
How hard is that to hook up to a 292?
It's come up a few times, and they're not that spendy. Edit: Did some research, and I'm thinking the lower geared-rear will be less hassle... One day, I want an NV4500 in there, but until then... Last edited by Oregoon; 11-23-2008 at 01:27 AM. |

Re: Lowering questions...
Oregoon, Don't waste your time with the ECE conversion Kit. Dutchman Axles is located right here in Portland. 83rd and Alberta. Dutchman are by far one of the leaders of custom made axles out there. Most of the NHRA pro drag guys have there axles made right here in Portland. I just 5 on 5 lug axles made for my 66 rear end for less then $250 and I got them in 4 days. All guaranteed and right here in town. They do this conversion all the time. I run a built 350 4bolt main with munci 4 speed and a 355 eaton posi. Runs like a raped ape. Fast fast. I think that I can find you a munci if your are interested. www.dutchmanms.com.. If you need anything hit me up.. we have a small shop in Tigard.

Hell yes! Local, affordable (in a month or two...), and no shipping involved!
I'll be hassling you for a sway bar in the weeks to come! |
