Re: 63' Custom Cab SWB Build

I like the bumper and roll pan, It's a very clean look. That's the way the factory should have done it! Great job

Re: 63' Custom Cab SWB Build

I didn't notice you had your roll pan back there. I like that little change. I might have to look into doing some thing like that myself If I go with a rear bumper.

Re: 63' Custom Cab SWB Build

TTT. Can you share what you did as far as how high you mounted your tank? Looks to be below the frame rails. What did you do in front of the tank to use what looks to be the stock straps? Did you just weld a piece of steel across the rear? Thanks.

Re: 63' Custom Cab SWB Build

I like the Bumper/roll pan look. It really cleans it up, and makes the bumper look closer to the bed.

The tank came from a chevy van 77-82. It fits perfectly between the frame rails in the back. My truck is a short bed so I had to trim a very little bit of the cross forward of the tank. I also slotted the front of the crossmember to mount the original straps. (see pics) I welded a 3X4 piece of angle across the back of the frame rails then drilled it to mount the hooks of the straps. The majority of the tank from the flange up is between the frame rails with the lower 4" or so below. The first pic you can see how the straps are mounted and the trimmed cross. The second & third pic you can see where I hole sawed through the frame rail for the fuel fill and the lower portion of the tank below the frame rail and the gusset I welded from the 3X4 angle to the side of the frame rail. The fourth pic is the 3X4 angle with hooks mounted and the fifth pic shows how much of the tank sits below the frame rails. Hope that answers your question. Dan

Great build. The rear bumper/roll pan set up is extremely clean. Thanks for posting all of the pics and info. Love the Ridge Runners. What wheels are you putting on this truck?

I have a set of 18 billet specialties but I think I am going to run the steel wheels that are on it with rings and dog dish to begin.

Either way you can't go wrong. The steelies are always classic looking especially with rings and caps. The 18" billets would be nice as well. I have 17" rims on mine and I think the proportions of 17's and 18's look great in the wheel wells. Nice build.

Know this is an old thread, but has anybody seen any updates on this build? See the member hasn't been here in a few years, but didn't know if anyone knew the truck.

Sorry but I have put this rig on hold and restored my 61' Bel Air and now my 57' Buick and currently am doing my 35' Ford 5-window coupe. I will get back to this next year. I also talked with you over at 348-409 as I know you are doing a 348 in one of your 63's.
Thanks for your interest.
Dan

Re: 63' Custom Cab SWB Build

Hey Dan and thanks for the response. Yeah, it was me in the 348/409 forum. Dropped the 348 in the frame this weekend so I do some mock up while working on the stepside. Two builds at once is tedious......was just wondering how much frame trimming you did for header clearance.

I didn't do any frame trimming. I am running a 73' front cross member and motor mount perches and my headers are for 73-87 BBC.
