Re: I think she **** the bed....

ok, I replaced the p/s pump today and found out that wasn't the problem!

There is a loose big metal ring around the main pulley area under the water pump. I'm not sure what it is, but it's a big metal ring that is loose, sitting on the pulley. Harmonic balancer ring?

I just bought a haynes manual but I'm not seeing it in the book.

It's sitting on the pulley and bouncing around loose when the truck is running, like a hoola hoop. What is it?!? I'll get a pic in the am when it's light out.

Re: I think she **** the bed....

Yep.... Sounds like it tossed the harmonic balancer ring (it's steel held in place w/the molded rubber). Do not run the engine until getting this repaired. It's a common problem on high milage OE balancers. Pull it off & install a new one (new, not a different used one).

Re: I think she **** the bed....

Replacing the harmonic balancer requires alittle effort. Not a hard job, but you have to remove a few things to get to it. Fan assy, probaly the water pump, crank pulley and space will be limited. But I am sure you can do it, just take your time. I suggest, while you are down there, go ahead and throw a new timing chain on her. With that many miles I am sure she would bennifit from a new chain. Oh yea, you are going to need a harmonic balancer puller to get the old one off. Most auto parts store will rent or loan you one. Good luck.

Re: I think she **** the bed....

I'm pretty sure my uncle replaced the timing chain. It has a new cam in it and I think he put a new chain in with the new cam, but I'll check to be sure.

thanks again guys!

Re: I think she **** the bed....

hey guys, I wanted to update this post, it ended up being the harmonic balancer, but I replaced both the balancer and the power steering pump. Now she runs smooth as glass!

Nobody likes Haynes.
People buy em cause they are cheap and at autozone.
The one I got with my Volvo does seem pretty complete, I built a new ignition harness with it, but in general haynes manuals are for basic repairs, and I don't need a manual for basic repairs.
Napa has Chilton, and maybe pep boys?

The dampner must have been pretty wasted to make all of that noise.

oh it was. The rubber part deteriorated to the point where the outer ring came off and was spinning around the inner part. I saved all the pieces.
