Re: OK, I have to weld!
I say go for the Northern Tool deal.. unless TSC (tractor Supply) has them cheaper with tax...
You can get lincoln at home depot, look for 10% coupons... $439 right now online.. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...ctId=100093231

Re: OK, I have to weld!
Struck out on the Miller, but bought a Hobart 140 from Northern Tool. Shipping was free, price is same as local Tractor Supply, but free cart is included. I'm happy, and hope to buy a helmet tomorrow and I suppose gas later in the week.
Guess I'll have to find some scrap sheet metal to practice on! It doesn't take much to excite a 51 year old man. |

Re: OK, I have to weld!
let us know how it works out... free cart is a score as well. I bought gas from tractor supply, $38 for the #3 will last for a long time. They also have sheetmetal there to practice on. Don't get the 22ga stuff, go for 16ga.... ask me how I know!
Just be sure to always clean the area for your ground and the weld..makes a world of difference. Good luck

Re: OK, I have to weld!
Cool man.....they usually come with some guidelines on welding. Read up and try to burn some stuff together. It can be frustrating for awhile but you will eventually get the feel for what you are doing. Its taken me awhile but now Im making anything that I need. Good luck.

If if sounds like frying bacon while you are welding, you are there. It's all up to you then. Good luck.

Re: OK, I have to weld!
Sounds like good advice. I have a buddy who is a good Tig welder and very safety conscious. I'm hoping he'll point me in the right direction!

Re: OK, I have to weld!
Another good safety tip. Don't wear tennis shoes. It's nothing like getting a red hot BB between your toes. If you can't get them off in a hurry, just grin and bear it. I speak from experience.

been there and done that too... amazing that it didn't burn my shoes or socks but it hurt between my toes for a week!

Re: OK, I have to weld!
Covering up is good!!!!! I wear shorts year round here in desert. Last fall I welded some stuff on the floor between my legs and gave myself sunburn on my inner thighs. Didnt figure it out 'til the next day at work....
