Re: kids these days...
hey friz you can still get eye damage that way the lids won't filter enough of the UV's please be a good dad ( I know you already are) and teach him about proper pers. protective gear. Please?
I don't blame the kids as much as the parents. I was lucky my dad and all his friends were bikers and rodders so I was raised around this stuff. A lot of my friends can't even change there own oil. I blame our society and especially the trendy greenies that want to make us ride mass transit and sit in front of our TV's and computers until it tells us what to go out and buy. I could talk about govt and social engineering conspiricies until I was run off the board but I won't. one look at where we've gone as a people in the last decade or so will make it all too appearant. In our lives filled with emissions inspections, neighborhood associations, environmentalists, disposable everything I honestly wonder how long my daughter will be able to enjoy motorsport hobbies. ok that's my rant for today. Josh PS when I had my shop I used to take on 1 HS senior every year as an intern to hopefully encourage more young men and women into the automotive lifestyle.

I don't want to hijack this thread any more than I already have
I'm going to start a thread on another board once the engine/trans are mounted. I can post a link in general discussion if people are interested. By the way NWD02 your truck is looking good! Love the color. Bet it felt good to see those kids wake up. |

Here is a short story of my goofy kid and parent encounter. I had my truck at the Michigan nationals car show a few years ago. I will never forget this, I walked away to look at another car, and when I turned around, there was a 13 year old kid crawling around in my truck playing with the switches and knobs???????? I thought" Am I seeing things? He isn't really in my truck I spent 2 years making it look like a Baldwin piano is he???? And sure enough, his dad was standing right there with him. I asked his dad what they were doing in my truck, and by the way, GET OUT OF IT!!!! He said with a laugh, he's just looking around... It's like, get a clue would you. I mean that truck has a 10 point role cage in it. You can't just crawl in easy, you will brake the console if you are not carefull. Any way, that's my rant. Sorry, it still gets me going......This is why I have my kids with me (2 and 3 years old) in the garage on the second truck. This way I can start teaching them to appreciate the truck and cars, and I don't have to worry about them at an event we may be at. Chris Last edited by Prostreet 72; 12-05-2008 at 09:11 AM. |

Re: kids these days...
i am 17 and i have had my 72 since i was eight years old...dad had it then whenever something broke or went wrong he was like lets wait til the weekend then we'll fix it..hes a trucker.. so i would always be so excited to help him with it..we got bunch of stuff redone then he got motor and trans rebuilt later on when i was about 15.. then he was like im tired of this truck i wanna sell it.. it had a for sale sign on it for a day and i ripped it up and threw it at him... had a big long fight..in the long run i won haha imagine that... he was like a big block is too much power for you...then on my 16 bday he was wrapped a small box up and i opened it and it was keys to the 72. he said since you have put so much blood sweat and tears in it here you go... sorry for writing a book but i wanted to say there are some teenagers like me and that 16 year old that replied on here about having these kinda trucks... i love these to death...

Re: kids these days...
what a turn around...that truck is lookin sweet!
i've been into older trucks all my life. i used to spend every weekend all through high school working on my '80, so i never really had much of a social life. i got away from that for a few years, started goin out more, but after about a 2 year hiatus, i've decided to go back to where i belong, workin on trucks. nothing compares to the feeling |

Re: kids these days...
Your truck looks great.I and now my son were raised on 60's muscle. My dad had a 60 something Monza Spyder, 66 390 Galaxy 500, 55 Crown Vic, bought the 68 Chevy new. Then I had the 66 HP Mustang. Then I kept the Mustang but got a SC T-Bird, and an SHO Taurus (Kids by then, needed a family car). Now my son and I work on the old truck whenever we can and his 97 Cobra. None of the ricers for us, unless its motorcycles, then its several Hayabusa's through the years. We are putting back together the one I totaled last month now for him. I got an 08...Life is good for an old guy...

Re: kids these days...
I missed out on working on my dads gto I helped him for the first year when I was in third grade but he stoped working on it when my brother got his duster and you know how that goes you hang around the older brother for to long and next thing you know he has you buy your ankles hanging you over the banster telling you to leave him alone, he's got 6 years on me and when he's 18 and your 12 theres no chance. But now that the duster is sidlined to his kids and my dads done with the GTO all three of us work on my truck, and now I can hold my own with the brother because I out grew him. Its funny how that works

Re: kids these days...
im 17 and i love working on and driving old trucks and cars. you would actually be suprised how many kids actually like older cars/trucks. i have a few frriends that have projects going on. one friend of mine is currently building a 67 short stepper at home that he is hoping on finishing in the spring, and is working on a 80 vette at school. another is working on a 74 firebird. there is also a 79 firebird that another friend just started. plus others like a 84 gmc k20, 76 chev c10, and one that just finished helping his dad on his 72 cheyene. the first time i drove my truck to school everyone stopped to look at it. but dont get me wrong, there are a few ricers there too, the only one that has out ran me was a 07 suburu wrx that mommy and daddy gave him. one vw jetta used to around that parking lot revving his fart can, and in the winter he drifts, i was just about to leave when he went by revving, so i waited for him to come around behind me and i just let r rip, he still goes around reving but not when im in my truck lol.

Re: kids these days...
BUT, it ain't always the kid's fault.
You guys who get and keep your kids involved in what you're doing are setting the good example, from a gearhead point of view. There's a few million parents out there who would never even consider letting their little angels get mixed up in anything like putting a wrench on a motor vehicle of any kind - never mind ruining the property values in their quarter-mansion subdivision by dragging home some old car or truck. Imagine the mess it would make in the garage, Lolz. Others use the interweb and video games as cheap babysitters to keep their latchkey kids out of trouble. ( myspace keeps kids out of trouble? ROFL) Good intentions or not, that's how it goes these days. We won't go into living vacariously through kid's participation in sports. Didn't some little-league coach get shot a couple years ago because he benched some kid? Nuff said. Whatever you might think of Jesse James and / or West Coast Choppers, he said something on one of those Discovery Channel shows that made a lot of sense to me - "Don't buy your thirteen year-old a computer or a video game, buy 'em a welder....that way he'll always be able to have job making twenty-five bucks an hour instead of being an unemployed computer geek" Last edited by D.FENS; 12-06-2008 at 07:18 PM. Re: kids these days...
When I was younger I was into restoring old stuff big time.My dad was a clever guy and tought me all about carpentry and woodworking and such which stuck as I'm a carpenter now, but he was no mechanic and I tought myself how to weld and bend metal and swap engines and such. I worked on a 61 chevy pickup and a 69 camaro both frame up resterations, and some other stuff but after getting married and kids I couldnt afford the time or money to do that, now the kids are older and I started getting back into it and my son who has always loved my old cars and trucks is doing it with me. We have been overhauling the shop the last few years and now are set up with a lift an 80 gal 2 stage compreser, sand blaster with a 18' x 24 ft slab to blast on, tire machines and welders.Next we hope to get a cartisery to rework my 69 camaro and my sons 70 chevelle. He's 18 today and has his first frame off going now a 90 S10.The frame is sand blasted ,painted, lowered and for his birthday I got him new roters front brake pads and a crome dif cover and his mom gave him some money for a new transmission. He also saved up money from work and got new fenders and a cowl induction hood, the cab is nearly mint and only needs a little paint on the bottom before it go's back on.I couldnt be prouder,Oh and I tought him that carpentry stuff too and now he works for me in the family buisness.
