Re: Caddy Light Install

i said in my previous post he is doing fine it was just some advice from someone who has done customizing similar to what he has done. didnt realize some of you guys are so sensitive. jrsmith_2010 i thought you were using the bondo to just fill in the empty spots, my bad on that. if practicing on other metal and taking your time means im critizing too much, then sorry for writing anything.

Re: Caddy Light Install

I am just happy that you are working on trucks and not out doing bad things. You know how teens are now. So good job!

Here is a link that has fillers and I know I have seen a pre made box that you can by too. But you can try and make it if you like. Please keep doing what you are doing. Let us know if you need anything..

You can also buy those tail light fillers much cheaper here. They are the same ones I have on my truck.

Re: Caddy Light Install

JR, I am going to throw a little constructive criticism at you. It was brought up that you aren't welding out 100%, trust me on this, it will lead to problems in the long run. What you need to do is move around as you weld. weld a very small section, then move on to another further away, and bounce around until you are welded out.

Also, keep your heat low, and don't drag long beads. Also if the wind is blowing, put up a barrier so as that your shielding gas does not get blown away.

You want to weld it all out for another reason as well. The bondo doesn't have a expansion/contraction rate that is identical to the steel, it is close, but not the same. when you have two pieces of metal that meet that are not welded together, the bondo will crack here because it is not designed to work in that function. It is filler, not glue.

Another thing you can do to keep warping to a minimum is get some old towels, fold em over a few times, wet them down with cold water, and hang them over the side of the truck, an inch or so away from where you are welding. this will absorb the heat, and keep the panel from heating rapidly, and thus keep it from warping.

And one final thought, if it doesn't work out cutting the lights in vertically like you have, I would seriously look at frenching them into your roll pan turned sideways.

Good Luck - Beast

Re: Caddy Light Install

well i think im pretty much done when the caddy lights r in, the interior is all custom, motor is healthy and the body is almost done. hopin by the end of winter break it will be in paint

but i am gonna do something custom with the licence tag, im gonna make a holder where i can mount it up by the cab in the corner of the bed on the drivers side

Re: Caddy Light Install

well they r closer to be done! should be done for too long! heres what went down today. ive decided that when they r in, its gonna be sunk in an inch from the normal body line, for a total of 2 inches where i need to weld in the clip nut for it to screw in.

heres to show how much i have to fill in when i weld it all up, i cut to much but its not to bad it can be fixed.
passenger side

drivers side

Re: Caddy Light Install

I give it to you for having the guts to cut your truck up...... BUT is there anyone near him that would volunteer to help him out a little??? I LOVE caddy tails in just about anything that they don't belong in.. AND NO before everyone jumps on my back.. I'm not bashing him but someone needs to help him cause there isn't going to be any bed left to fix....... He is definitely not scared to work and shown initiative. He deserves some help.
